World University Games 2011 Round Up

World University Games Round up from Shenzhen

The games were a big success for the Chinese city. It was a superbly organised championship, in a brand new stadium, having about 30,000 spectators, several world-class performances were shown

The medal table was led by Russia with 11 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze, with Jamaica coming in second with six gold medals and Turkey was third with five gold.

In the 800m Australian Lachlan Renshaw overpowered everyone in the last 50 metres and finished in 1:46.36. Chinese Haining Teng came in second and got the silver in a personal best time of 1:46.62.

The men’s 1500m Algerian twins Imad and Abdelmadjed Touil got gold and silver, respectively, in front of Valentin Smirnov (RUS).

Alberto Paulo (POR) won the 3000m Steeplechase winning Universiade 2007 champion and event record-holder Halil Akkas (TUR). Paulo ran 8:32.26, and Akkas finished in 8:34.57.

In the women’s 800m, Elena Kofanova (RUS) ran to the front from the start and trying to prevent any form of challenge. However, at the home straight, she was beaten by Ukrainian Olha Zavhorodnya, who finished in a personal best time of 1:59.56. Kofanova got silver while Liliya Lobanova (UKR) came with a finished with a 1:59.94.

After 5 laps, Binnaz Uslu (TUR) controlled in the 5000m final, which made her clinch victory in 15:41.15 in front of Portugal’s Sara Moreira.

Asli Alpketin, who finished in 4:05.56 came in first in the 1.500m. She was followed by Anna Mishchenko (UKR), and Ekaterina Gorbunova (RUS)

Fadime Suna, from Turkey, was the strongest during the remaining distance and finished with a time of 33:11.92. second and third were Tanaka and Ishibashi who did in a time of 33:15.57and 33:41.90, respectively.

Binnaz Uslu (TUR) led from the early race of the women’s 3000m Steeplechase final and was never led. She won the gold medal and won Ludmina Kuzmina of Russia by 10 seconds. Jun Yuan of China was third.

Spain’s Julia Takacs Nyerges challenged and won the two Russians and got gold in the women’s 20Km Race Walk, clocking in a time of 1:33:51. Tatiana Shemyakina was 32 seconds behind to take silver and Nina Okhotnikova was third in 1:35:10.

Rameshon has taught in Hwa Chong Institution, plus several schools, and Republic Polytechnic as well. He has won many accolades and he was awarded Merit Award for 1991 marathon performance in breaking the national record of Singapore, at that time. He has made 22 male athletes do a marathon in sub-3hrs. He has made 7 female runners do sub-4 hours for the marathon, as well. He was inducted to the ‘Roll of Honour’  by the then College of Physical Education, organised by Singapore Olympic Academy, in 1998, for breaking the National record repeatedly 4 times, till he did 2hr 24min 22sec).

He also has a Coaching group and he trains them on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7pm at Botanic Gardens. Those interested can call him at 91004369 for coaching assistance, to improve performance.
