Kenyan born Turkish Özbilen wins 800m in Ninove

Ilham Tanui Özbilen doing 1:44.25 and breaking the Turkish record

7 August 2011
Ninove, Belgium

On 7th Aug 2011, Kenyan born Ilham Tanui Özbilen, running for Turkey, from 20 June 2011 onwards, did an impressive time for the 800m running and attaining a time of 1:44.25, which is a new national record for Turkey. Right now, Özbilen ranks 10th fastest on the 2011 800m world lists.

The race had Matthias Rosseeuw leading the race earlier on.  After 600m onwards, Özbilen was already five metres ahead of Matthias and managed to finish the race in a strong manner. The race was run in heavy rain. Özbilen has a 1500m time of 3:31.70 in 2009. It is believed that he has great potentials in the shorter distance race like the 800 race.

The sad thing for us to know is that Ozbilen will not be able to run for Turkey at the World Championships in Daegu.
