10000m Women record for South American champs fall in São Paulo

Simone Alves da Silva, breaking the South American 10,000m record in São Paulo

Simone Alves da Silva performed exceptionally well at the 30th edition of the Brazilian National Clubs Competition, which is also the National Championships 2011.  The Championships was held between 3rd and 7 August  “Parque Ibirapuera” track in São Paulo. Alves da Silva (Morro do Chapeu, Bahia, 12 September 1984) continued her impressive progression by setting a new 10,000m South American record with 31:16.56 on Wednesday 3 August. The previous record belonged to Carmen de Oliveira Furtado, whose time was 31:47.76, set in 1993 IAAF World Championships.

Alves da Silva ran a fast and lonely 3000m in 9:22.80, and the 5000m in 15:38.24. Her performance was well-received considering the 760m above sea level disadvantage that she had to go through. Subsequently, on Saturday, 6th August, Simone completed the long-distance double by winning the 5000m in 15:39.37. The race did not start off fast, however, with Alves da Silva's with the frontal attacking race she, she covered the final 3000m in 9:06.47. Considering her actual PB is 9:09.41, she is in great form.
