Mutai and Chepkirui - Winners in Bogota

Still undisputed with a time of 1:02:20 course record by Geoffrey Mutai at the Bogota Half Marathon

Bogota, Colombia -
The favourites, 2011 Boston Marathon champion Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya and Joyce Chepkirui took that men and women's title, respectively. Mutai broke the course record doing 1:02:20, and Joyce took the women’s title in 1:13:34.

Men’s Race

There was an early still challenge between defending champion Deriba Merga of Ethiopia and Mutai during the race.  Both had a big gap over others when they reached the 5km mark. They were a league of their own. It was a neck and neck challenge after that and then Merga, not able to keep pace with Mutai, started to cave in to the latter's pace.

At the 10km mark, Mutai was already 20 seconds ahead. Mutai passed 15Km in 44:10 running a solo race and was only 18sec away from Merga’s 2010 course record. Finally, at 21km mark, Mutai did 1:02:20. Merga came in second place with a time of 1:04:49, just a few seconds away from 2011 Rotterdam Marathon champion Wilson Chebet (1:04:57) with Colorado coming in fourth in 1:05:11 and four-time champion Macharia fifth in 1:05:26.

Women’s Race

At the 1km Kenyan Joyce Chepkirui led the group of runners to a stunning three minutes flat timing, with just fellow Kenyan Peninah Arusei (a Bronze medalist over the Half Marathon in the 2010 IAAF Half Marathon Championships in Nanning, China last year) and Ethiopian Mare Dibaba for company.

After 2km mark, Chepkirui was all alone and kept at her big lead and passed through the five kilometres in 16:28, by which time she had an almost 30 second lead over Ethiopians Dibaba and 2010 Bogotá champion Sherwage Alene.

By 10Km the lead was almost one minute, with Dibaba in second and 2010 IAAF World Cross Country champion Emily Chebet coming in third.

Finally, Chepkirui did 1:13:34 at the 21km finishing point.  Dibaba did 1:13:54, with Chebet taking the third position in 1:15:41, Alene came in fourth in 1:16:26 and Peruvian Gladys Tejeda came in fifth with 1:18:25.

The weather was warm and the temperature was between 16- 20 degrees centigrade.
