Kenyan David Rudisha has broken the long-standing 800m world record in Berlin and he has gone and done it again this time in Rieti, Italy. It is the second time in a week, Rudisha set a new time of 1min 41.01sec. Previously, last Sunday in Berlin, Rudisha had broken Wilson Kipketer's 13-year-old record by two-hundredths of a second, with a time of 1:41.09. He had forecasted to reporters in Berlin that he could go faster and he kept true to his word, shaving 8 hundredths of a second off his week-old record.

Dramatic finish at YOG Middle and Long Distance races.

All the races of the long distances were interesting to watch. Good times were recorded in the 1000m for boys where Geleto Mohammed from Ethiopia won the race in 2min 19.54sec. In the female category of the 1000m race, Ethiopia's athlete by the name of Ashame Tizita came in first with a time of 2min 43.24sec. Both timings were very respectable indeed.

In the 2000m steeplechase race, Kenya's Mutuku Peter Mathika came in first with a time of 5min 37.63sec. Fayisa Habtamu of Ethiopia ran the race with a time of 5min 39.10sec and came in second.

In the 3000m girl's race, Chesir Gladys from Kenya came in first with a time of 9min 13.58sec. She was averaging the first 3 laps doing 1min 12sec per lap before speeding up for the fourth and fifth rounds causing a gap of about 60-70metres. At the final round, Kyuma Moe from Japan was gaining ground. However, it was too late to catch up the lost ground. Kyuma Moe came in second with a time of 9min 23.70.

In the boys' 3000m, the race ended dramatically as people were thinking whether it will be an Ethiopian or the Japanese or maybe even the Moroccon who will win the race. However, everybody was dumbfounded when Osman Abrar from Eritrea suddenly surged out to the front of the elite runners' crowd at the last 220metres with phenomenal speed and caused a big gap of 20 metres at the last 150metres and maintained this gap all the way till the end of the race and won the race convincingly.

Dr Hon Chiew Weng - The Student Oriented Principal

This issue is from the Hwa Chong Institution MOCH Issue 2

In my life, one of the best person I have met is Dr Hon. In the past, he was known as Mr Hon when I joined Hwa Chong Institution in the year 2000. As a principal of Hwa Chong, I feel that he has integrity in whatever he is doing. He will never let anyone down when it comes to integrity.

The joyful thing about him is that we can see him smiling most of the time. He even answers to questions of audience, students and teachers in a smiling manner.

Once, while doing my interview with him in the past for my Masters in Education programme, I realised that he cares for students a lot. The reason is that he is a firm believer of exercise as a lifelong pursuit, apart from caring for their studies. As a student, who was in scouts, Dr Hon was very active in it. In his younger days, Dr Hon was very involved in the outdoor pursuit. At present, even though he does not have the time to exercise if given the time, I believe he would exercise. This is because of the conversation I had with him. He would always like to promote sports to the young ones.

Dr Hon showed his resilience during the Integrated Programme as the High School and College of Hwa Chong had to merge. He emerged a victor. Furthermore, he is an admirable and a pleasant person to meet. Hence, let us find out more about Dr Hon in the Issue of MOCH.

In this issue, MOCH had the exclusive privilege to meet up with, Dr Hon Chiew Weng, the Principal of Hwa Chong Institution. He gave his sincere answers to the questions asked.

Hence, let us look at the answers he gave during the interview.

MOCH: What qualities do you like about Hwa Chong?
Students in Hwa Chong are amiable and nice to teach. They are quite obedient. On the other hand, obedience is not necessarily a good thing. I hope that students are able to challenge me in a positive manner, giving me constructive feedback.

Moch: Do you have any hobbies?
I have no hobbies because I have no spare time! My life is quite routine. I wake up at 4:30am, clear my mail until 6:00am, at which point I head to school and clear my Ministry Of Education mail at 6:30am, I receive about a hundred mails a day, and I have to reply to every single one of them. My remaining free time is thus divided between two activities - Exercising and Sleeping.

MOCH: What is the most difficult decision you had to make in life?
There were only two major decisions I had to make. Who to get married to and what career to choose. I had no difficulty because the choice was simple. I became a teacher because I had no money to study, and the only scholarship I had was a teaching scholarship. Nonetheless, I realised that I really love what I do.

For marriage, It was simple. I only had one girlfriend.

MOCH: What was your childhood like?
It was very happy! I was not as stressed as all of you in this day and age. My parents gave me full autonomy in whatever I did. They even gave me permission to sign my own report card.

MOCH: Any special memories from back then?
I would say I really enjoyed my time as a scout. I learnt to cook on trees, something that most people do not have an opportunity to do these days. Survival skills are important, and if placed in a jungle, we could climb up a tree and cook on top to avoid wild animals. I recall my seniors setting fire to our tents, so after I cooked my food, I had to climb down to extinguish the fire. I also learnt about the importance of having friends, for we could always watch each other's back. Speaking of friends, I do not really understand how youths these days are able to know so many people on Facebook.

Watch the 800m New World Record time in the Berlin's Diamond League
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4oncJS51hE

Twenty-one-year-old Kenya's David Lekuta Rudisha, fresh from winning the African Athletics Championships' 800m race, has broken the 13-year-old men's 800-meter world record at Berlin's Diamond League meeting on Sunday.

Wilson Kipketer's timing of 1min 41.11sec was slashed to 1min 41.09sec. Rudisha shaved two-hundredths of a second off the time set by compatriot Wilson Kipketer in August 1997. Wilson Kipketer was recently in Singapore to do a middle distance course for aspiring athletes and teachers, coaches and teacher-coaches.

Recently, Rudisha came near to break the world record a month back in Huesden- Zolder, Belgium, where he clocked 1:41.51, the second-fastest time ever in history, just behind the world record time of 1min 41.11sec. Rudisha forecasted bravely," Now that I have run that time, I can say I have the ability to improve and go faster,".

The blistering 400m run was run at a time of 48.65sec by his team-mate Sammy Tangui of Kenya. Sammy was the rabbit until he was at the 450metres. Deceleration of pace was taking place to Sammy. Rudisha, from there, took over the lead and sped to the front, pushing the pace even further. At the 480 metres mark, Sammy dropped out of the race, leaving Rudisha to do the work alone. At the 600m mark, the time stood at 1min 14.54sec. He had a clear lead of 25metres at the last 30metres of the race. At the finish, fellow Kenyans by the name of Boaz Kiplagat Lalang and Abraham Kiplagat came in 2nd and third in a time of 1min 44.34sec and 1min 44.49sec. Leonel Manzano, Jackson Mumbwa Kivuva and Adam Kszczot came in 4th, 5th and 6th in a time of 1min 44.56sec, 1min 44.91sec and 1min 45.07sec, respectively.

Wilson Kipketer
Wilson Kipketer, on Monday, said that he expected his world record to go over time.  He knew that David Rudisha may smash his long-standing 800m world record. He also predicted a big future for the young Kenyan runner. Sebastion Coe held the record for 11 years until Kipketer broke it in August 1997 and held it for 13 years. Kipketer,  the three-time world champion, who is attending the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore as an athlete role model said, "I wasn't a bit surprised to hear the news,"

"David has been running well all this year, and even last year, and I thought he could do it one day. In a way, it was good to see it broken after so many years."

Kipketer is at present a coach and consultant.

Picture 1 - Sonia O' Sullivan - The Olympic Silver Medalist (Sydney 2000) and the World Champion (1995)(1998).

I became a fan of Sonia when I saw her running in the World Championships 1993. That was the year I did 2hrs 28min in Berlin. I was fascinated by both Ismail kirui's and Sonia's performance. Her brilliant running career is very spectacular. I will present the part 2 interview first and in another article, I will do the prequel of doing the part 1 story on her illustrious running career and achievements. Hence, let me start this article by interviewing her.

 Sonia O' Sullivan
Can you share with us your PB 800m, 1500m, 3000m such if any, 5000m, half-marathon and marathon?
They are as follows:
Picture 2 - Sonia O'Sullivan, in action during a race.

800m - 2min 00sec
1500m - 3min58sec
3000m - 8min 21sec
5km - 14min 41sec
half - marathon - 67min 17sec
Marathon - 2hrs 29min 01sec

When did you take up athletics seriously?
It was when I was in secondary school. I ran many cross-country races earlier on. Gradually, I trained more and overtime I got serious over races, especially when I started winning races.

How many Olympics medals have you won?
I have 1 silver medal from 5000m Sydney 2000.

Which are the events that had to take part in and you have won a gold medal in the World Track and Field Championships? Can you also tell us the year as well?
In 1995, I have a Gold medal for 5000m. In 1998, I have 2 Gold medals for cross country, long & Short race.

Can you describe a race or races which you put in all your heart, mind and soul to run to your best? In other words, you are describing your toughest race that you have encountered?
I think the marathon is the hardest race to run. It is so unpredictable and you never know how you will feel later in the race. It is also very difficult to run so far on the hard road surface when you are used to training on the grass in parks and forests.

Can you share with us about your diet whenever you train and compete seriously?
Picture 3 - A slim and trim Sonia O'Sullivan

I try to eat healthy all the time, lots of fruit, vegetable, fish and lean meat. I think if you can eat a little bit of a large variety of foods then you should have a nutritious diet to help re-fuel during hard training. I also drink lots of water and electrolyte drinks when training in warm weather.

In your opinion, at what age should one start to take up running, and train, if they want to go for the Olympics?
I think once you are in High school and enjoy running then you should set your goals high and aim to compete at the Olympics.

Singapore is a hot country. Can your share with us on how you would advise on training in a hot and humid climate?
It is not easy to train in warm humid conditions but like everything else, if you can acclimatise your body gradually then you can get used to training in all conditions. It is probably most important to be re-hydrated before during and after training and not just water but also replacing salts and sugars lost while training. Electrolyte drinks are very popular and a good idea to dilute them as they can often be too sweet and sip throughout the day.

Is it beneficial to train in a hot and humid climate or in cool weather for endurance training?
It depends on the conditions you will be racing in. If the race is in a hot country then it is a good idea to prepare your body for what to expect. It is always easier to train in cool conditions after spending time in hot & humid conditions.

Are you still competing?
If yes, can you tell us which event are you training for?
I like to train to keep fit and run in local races for my club and fun runs that are not too difficult to travel to.

What is your advice to people at the age who want to take up running for fitness?
Begin slowly alternating walking and jogging, gradually building up to the distance and time you have available to train each day. It is a good idea for everyone to set aside some time each day to exercise.

Picture 4 - Sonia with a group of interested runners.

What is your next goal in life?
I am happy to stay fit and encourage my children to lead a fit and healthy lifestyle.

Singapore's track and field athletes fail to qualify for YOG

Chan U-Gene Report

Mon, May 24, 2010

The Straits Times

SINGAPORE's track and field athletes have failed to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games via the two-day Asian Zone Qualification, which ended yesterday.
The eight boys and eight girls were unable to secure a place in the Aug 14-26 event against the likes of bigger nations such as China, Kazakhstan and Japan.

However, the advantage of being the host nation allows the Republic to submit a wild-card entry of five boys and five girls, should they be unable to qualify directly.

2000m Steeplechase Qualification

After the start of the 2000m race, Kenya's runner by the name of Mutuku Peter Matheka ran to the front to lead the runners. After the first water-jump, he pulled away from the est of the runners and was having a comfortable lead. This went on until the second water jump, where Ethiopia's Fayisa Habtamu and Peter Matheka came out of the pack and maintained the top three positions.

At the last 1km of the steeplechase race, Kenya's Peter Matheka was starting to open up the lead and kept pulling away. At the 3rd water-jump, he was having a 10metres lead from the nearest competitor. At the last 2 round of the 2000m steeplechase race, Peter was having a lead of 12m. At the 4th water-jump, the lead was going to 20 metres. The lead was 25-30m at the last round of the race, where Peter kept surging. Peter was leading all the way until the last water-jump, Fayisa Habtamu, from Ethiopia, was around 10 metres away and started to catch up Peter. At the last 50metres, there was a tussle for a win. Fayisa had another gear in his leg to finally finish as the fastest finisher.
