Day 1 SUMMARY

27 August 2011

Kenya gets top four positions for 10000m

The morning’s Marathon and this evening’s 10,000m, saw Kenya sweeping all podium finish and medals for the two events.

In a marathon, there was a 1-2-3 finish and in the 10000 metres, there was also a fourth finisher besides the clean sweep for the top three podium finish.

To date, it is known that no country has ever swept the medals at a World Championship or Olympic Games.

Besides Edna and her teammates getting top three in the women's marathon, in 10000m, Vivian Cheruiyot’s won the race by a commanding victory in 30:48.98, a personal best. Teammate Sally Kipyego took the silver while Linet Masai got the bronze. Priscah Cherono took the fourth placing, 0.12 seconds ahead of Ethiopian Meselech Melkamu, the African record holder.
