Current Update on our top runners.

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is on 03 July 2011, the same date as the Asean Boys race. Both Ashley Liew and Jeevanesh are hoping for a personal best time. Jeevanesh told me that if he can get a sub-16min, it should be enough. He wants to bring down his 5000m time slowly over time and he feels that he is still very young.

As for Ashley Liew, he feels that doing a sub-2hr 36min for the Gold Coast Marathon 2011 is a priority and he does not want to hurry in getting faster as he feels that he is still very young and over time there is still room to get faster. If things go very smooth on that day, Ashley may attempt a sub-2hr 30min.

As for the Asian School Cross-Country Championships 16 students are selected and are about to run on 25 June. I feel that it will be a good exposure for the students and this type of competition should have been given in the past.

The cross-country timing in the past 20 years ago was much faster. Over time, the timing has been slower. It is getting faster but much needs to be done in planning the National Schools' Cross-Country properly. In the past, we had heats and finals. Now, we have straight finals. This needs some discussion.

The current time of 14min 51sec done by Mok Ying Ren shows that Singaporeans can improve over time if they have been consistent. The SAA will have to ratify this timing as a record. If there are more competitions, the time will go as low as 14min 30sec in the near future if the coaches are supported to get the athletes faster. SEA Games timing has been stagnating as compared to the world time improvements. We have many young budding talents who needs the association support, especially when the youth goes to the Army.

I also feel that if people are very serious on the marathon, there are two now, the time for the Singapore best time for a marathon can go down to near 2hr 20s in 2 to 3 years time, maybe even a year's time if the top athletes are going for it. Support is needed from the SAA. The carded will have the support. I believe that developmental athletes should be supported strongly as well.

We now have only two marathoners, according to my perception, are young and can go far in their running. Let's support these athletes.
