Stephen Kiprotich - Second Uganda runner ever to win the for Olympics.

Kiprotich

My observation of this year's Olympic long-distance races is that most of the races were full of surprises. In this year's race, surprisingly, Kenya did not dominate much. As for England, it won double gold medals in men 5km and 10km track races. Mo Farah won both races. Ethiopia won the 5km (Meserat) and 10km (Dibaba) in the women's race. In the marathon for women, the race was won by an Ethiopian woman and in the men's marathon, the race was won by an Uganda runner by the name of  Stephen Kiprotich.

The Kenyans competed the marathon race in memory of the late Sammy Wanjiru. In 2008 Beijing race  Wanjiru captured the country’s first Olympic marathon gold ever. Unfortunately, things did not turn out well as he died last year after a fall from a balcony during a domestic dispute.

Stephen Kiprotich, 23, finished in 2 hr, 8 min, 1 sec

Abel Kirui of Kenya came in second with a time of 2:08:27, and Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich of Kenya was third in 2:09.37. The two Kenyan was not able to respond to Stephen Kiprotich's late surge in the later part of the race to win the race eventually. Meb Keflezighi of the USA did very well by finishing fourth in 2:11:06. "Fourth is not the place wanted to finish," Keflezighi told reporters. "But fourth in the world, I'll take it. I'm very proud of myself."
