Who is the Championship Record Holder for Singapore Open?
The Championship record was broken, in the past, in front of me when
I was 14 years of age. I saw Julian Goater, from Great Britain, running very
fast in Singapore Open doing a time of 29min 40. 80sec. The race I saw was held
at the National Stadium, which is now no more, with floodlights. Second for the
race was also a fast runner from India who did about 30min plus timing, a
sub-31min, for the race. The runner from India ran barefooted and tried all
his best to close up the gap with Julian Goater but the gap was increasing
instead. That race left a good impression in me as I realize that I have never
seen this kind of race in Singapore. I saw Julian and the Indian runner giving
all their best. Till now, Julian’s Championship record has existed all the way
until now and it clearly shows some signs of his great run in this hot and
humid climate and the time he did has stood the test of time.
Hence, it will be good to know about this gentleman who is about 59 years old now. No one could come near his record until now. Let us find out more.
Julian Norris Goater (born 12 January 1953) is a British long-distance runner.
He began his running career while
attending Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Elstree, where his father Barry
was a master. In 1979 he was a member of the team that took the gold medal at
IAAF World Cross Country Championships He was also in the team that won
the silver medal in World Cross Country Championships in 1982. In 1981 he was
the National Cross Country champion and finished 4th in IAAF WCCC. He set the
second-fastest 5000m time for a Briton(behind Brendan Foster) when he ran a
time of 13:15.59 in 1981 at Crystal Palace, London. His best time for the
10,000 m is 27:34.58 which was achieved in Oslo in 1982 and is still in the UK
top 10 of best ever times.
Goater took up triathlon and duathlon
in the1990s competing at National and International Age-Group levels. During
the late 1990s, he joined Team Volcano International, run by Chris Eversfield
and Iain Parsons, competing for the TVI team over a number of seasons. Goater
achieved a gold medal at the World Duathlon Championships (2001) in Rimini,
picking up another gold in Australia in 2005. He remains an active coach,
athlete and author. He is now living in and is often seen in the park training
young runners.
