Rudisha wins and secures a ticket to IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea (27 Aug to 4 Sep) – Kenyan Champs, Final Day

Nairobi, Kenya

On the final day of National Bank of Kenya National Athletics Championships 16th July, 48 world-class athletes competed in the IAAF World Championships, Daegu, Korea (27 Aug to 4 Sep).

The only unexpected thing that happened in 1500m women race when Hellen Obiri defeated Olympic champion, Nancy Jebet Lagat at the homestretch of the race.

Hence, some will be going for Daegu while may not. As a form of reward for those not running in Korea, the 70 athletes will run in the Pan African games that will run from September 3 to 18.

World 800m record holder, David Rudisha, retained his national title by doing 1:43.76, a mark slower than his 1:42.84 done in Kenya. In the race, Jackson Kivuva did a time of 1:44.40 while Alfred Kirwa Yego (1:44.76) finished third.

Rudisha said that his strategy was to control the pace right from the start and push when he was closing towards the finish line. He also remarked that he is reserving his energy for Daegu where he wants to do his best.

Subsequent performance to Daegu, Rudisha's plan is to compete in Monaco, to defend his Samsung Diamond League crown.

While the top three finishers were selected for Daegu, Boaz Lalang, the Commonwealth champion came in eighth with a time of 1:46.88. He expressed that he was very disappointed and felt embarrassed with the outcome but he is hoping that there will be another day for him to go for it.
