Kenyan Athletes dominate at the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro

Kenyan Athletes dominate at the World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro

There was a strong performance at the 5th CISM World Military Games 2011 (track and field programme) which ended on 23/07/2011, Saturday. The main event, of the day, was the women’s 3000m Steeplechase where Kenya's Mercy Njoroge won the race in 9:36.92. She was far in front of Iríni Kokkinaríou of Greece, who was a distant second in 9:39.53.

Also, Olympic champion Nancy Langat made the race very interesting by winning the race using a tactical approach to the 1500m race and came with a time of  4:18.15, with Germany's Denise Krebs coming in second with a time of 4:15.87.

In the middle and long-distance races, Kenyan men collected the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m titles.

Gideon Gathimba won the 1500m race in 3:40.62 ahead by edging off Moroccan Mohamed Moustaoui (3:41.04) and Imad Touil (3:41.24) of Algeria to second and third place, respectively. In the 5000m, Mark Kiptoo and Vincent Chepkok came in first and second, and clocked 13:06.17 and 13:06.31, respectively, pushing Bilisuma Shume of Bahrain to the third position, with a time of 13:06.73 personal best. In the 10000m race, Josephat Menjo won the race in 28:36.92 by breaking away from Bahraini Hasan Mahboob Ali who clocked 28:37.08.

The men's 800m, however, went to Poland's Marcin Lewandowski, who did 1:45.77, ahead of Kenyans Jackson Kivuva (1:45.93) and Geoffrey Matum (1:45.94), who came in second and third, respectively.

Rameshon has taught in Hwa Chong Institution, plus several schools, and Republic Polytechnic as well. He has won many accolades and he was awarded Merit Award for 1991 marathon performance in breaking the national record of Singapore, at that time. He has made 22 male athletes do a marathon in sub-3hrs. He has made 7 female runners do sub-4 hours for the marathon, as well. He was inducted to the ‘Roll of Honour’  by the then College of Physical Education, organised by Singapore Olympic Academy, in 1998, for breaking the National record repeatedly 4 times, till he did 2hr 24min 22sec).

He also has a Coaching group and he trains them on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7pm at Botanic Gardens. Those interested can call him at 91004369 for coaching assistance, to improve performance.
