Current News - Good news and bad news

Ang Mo Kio Murder
It was found from the newspapers that Sumanthiran s/o Selvarajoo, a former St Joseph's Institution boy, murdered a 64-year-old man by the name of Mr Loo Sheng Nam. The reason why this incident took place is still now known yet. Asia One reported that the boy had a history of violence. One of the incidents that took place in the past was Sumanthiran slashing his friend with a bread knife.

My comment:  We as an athletics community should ask whether we could have done something before this has taken place? I feel that sports is an arena where the character can be developed.

Mok Ying Ren
He has been selected for 5000m SEA Games from his performance in the Tokyo University Time-Trial. It is also stated that he might take part in the Standard Chartered Marathon (Singapore) 2011.

Sundown Marathon
Willy Kipkemoi Rotich, 20 years old, the winner of Singapore’s Sundown Marathon, has been disqualified because he ran under a different name, by the name Richard Habeya.

Also, Rotich has run under other names before. He competed in the Baguio 21km race in the Philippines using the tag of another Kenyan, Daniel Koringo. He was disqualified after that race when he was trying to collect his cash reward using Koringo’s passport.

Ashley Liew - Sub- 2hr 36min is my realistic target, sub-2hr 30min is a bonus
He is so far happy with the improvements that he is making. In the short term, "I would like to aim for a sub 2hr 36min for the Gold Coast Airport Marathon 2011. During the run, if I feel good, I will go for a sub-2hr 30min time." The range I give for Ashley is between 2hr 28min to 2hr 35min in the coming weeks if he runs according to the pace.

Jeevanesh - Potential to do sub- 15min with continued training till Aug 2911
At the rate that Jeevanesh is progressing, from the times he has clocked, I believe that he may be capable of even qualifying for the SEA Games for 5km, provided the date for qualifying is extended to Sept/Oct 2011, instead of July. However, Jeevanesh is just focusing on the coming ASEAN boys and not the SEA Games 2011, which is not on the agenda because of GCE 'A' Levels Exams.
