Adriana Aris - Despite her hectic work schedule, Adriana Aris runs at least three times a week. She tells Anusha K. how she keeps at it. Adriana enjoys running and finds it an instant stress reliever.

Athletic since young, Adriana Airs has always incorporated different forms of sport into her daily routine. The 39-year-old usually hits the tennis court or running track in the evening after work and on weekends.

"I was active in school athletics and was introduced to tennis from a young age. My parents would frequent the tennis courts and I tagged along. Now I play with my friends," said the executive editor of news production and creative marketing for news and current affairs at ntv7.

Adriana, who is of mixed Chinese-Malay parentage, also takes part in marathons and cross-country runs. One of her most memorable was the Skin cross-country run in Genting Highlands last year.

"This was challenging simply because it was on natural terrain. We trekked through the jungle on a steep hill and that ground," she recalls.

To maintain her current stamina, she runs at least three times a week. She either does a 10km run at Taman Tasik Lembah Klara. Taman Tun Dr Ismail. KL in the evening, or 3-5km on the treadmill at a nearby gym.

What keeps her going, she says, is a circle of close friends and colleagues who run with her. "But some of my friends don't run, so we brisk walk which is an equally good form of exercise. I tend to do activities though, even with my boss, Sofwan Mahmood. We'd go for excursions and marathons (as a team with other colleagues) and we train together."

For her cross-country runs, she trains at the gym alternating between lightweights, cycling and the step-up machine. She used to have a personal trainer to monitor her progress but now, she does that on her own.

"Once you have learnt something, practise it. Besides, having a personal trainer is expensive," says the petite lass.

She will be taking part in ntv7's Feel Good Run on July 3 at Sri Pentas, Bandar Utama. Petaling Jaya. The 3km Run With Celebrities, which is the trek she will take, is a charity run with proceeds going to Heart Foundation Malaysia, National Cancer Society and National Autism Society.

"I'm looking forward to the run as it's for a good cause. I don't see it as a competition, but more of everyone getting together, running with their families and bonding at the same time," she says.

"The 3km run is also a good start for non-runners. It's important that you understand your body. You should aim for a personal best that goes hand in hand with the best personal time you have clocked."

Adriana stress on the importance of stretching and warming up before and after a marathon. Doing warm-ups is important to reduce muscle stiffness and to get one mentally focused for a run or competition, she explains.

In 1998, Adriana became the youngest and first female sports editor in the country. For the next three years, she set up a formidable sorts desk at ntv7, heading an all-male unit. It was during this period that she started playing golf.

"I enjoy the game very much. They say when you're on the golf course, business is done. I’m privileged to have met on the course, people from all walks of life who have helped me in my career," she says.
