Lee Jian Ler

In my class, I saw this boy who used to be very versatile in goalkeeping, flying here and there, when a ball is being scored into the goal post. He was able to stop the ball from going in. This was during Physical Education lesson where the game to be learnt was on floorball. Usually, I look forward to seeing this class. It is one of the classes that has left a very good impression on Hwa Chong (college). I was also playing in the court and doing my best to score. With this guy, it was difficult to score.

Jian Ler is also good in playing other roles in a game - defender, attacker etc. He is an all-rounder. He has very good coordination and agility as well.

Above all, he is one such person who gives respect to teachers. A rare breed indeed! Earlier, while he was in the Health and Fitness Club, I told him to join the school cross-country team. He said that he will try. Over a period of time, he showed signs of improvement. However, it is just like Mun Yong Liang, the current chairman of Health and Fitness Club (Hwa Chong - Inst), Jian Ler suddenly improved fast over the last few weeks of the cross-country (national schools). In the national schools 5000m, he came in 7th and did the school proud.

I found out that today is his birthday and I would like to wish him 'Happy Birthday, Jian Ler'. When I interviewed Jian Ler, I realised that he is pursuing an active lifestyle and I thought that it is a good idea to introduce this fine young man to people interested to know him and pursue an active lifestyle throughout life.

Tell us about your diet?
I avoid taking fast food and I eat a lot of fruits before meals to absorb the nutrients better.

What were your results for National Schools' Cross-Country Championships 2010?
I came in 10th position.

What were the races that you were doing for last year apart from nationals school sports?
I participated in a lot of road races, ranging from 5km to marathon. It included Safra bay run, new balance real run, standard chartered marathon etc. I also took part in my first triathlon in the HP tri-factor.

How are your parents towards your doing well in the National Schools' Cross-Country and National?
They were very supportive of my passion for running and encouraged me to take up the sports for life.

What are the values that can be inculcated through sports?
It teaches us the value of perseverance and sportsmanship. There is no easy way out and only those who put in their heart and soul towards their cause will succeed in life.

Any races you would like to do in future?
I am focusing more on-road races as it enables to get faster timing compared to track. Safra bay run will be next up on my agenda.

Do you like to run in the Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon this year or in the near future?
I ran it last year and experienced it first hand. Marathon is the true test to one's perseverance and endurance. I will only go for it when I think I am up to the task of running a good race probably this year or next year.

What is your advice to people who are thinking about exercise?
When stamina runs out, inspiration kicks in. A pair of running shoes is all that is needed to kick start the exercise!
