Results of the Middle and Long Distance Events (10-19 June 2010)

In the Women Open 800m, K Ganthimanthi improved the Games Record time of 2min 12.89sec, set by Vally a/p Michael (2004), to a time of 2min 09.57sec. (This was run on 15 Jun at a time of 8:25pm). To add another feather to her cap, in the 1500m, K Ganthimanthi broke the Games Record of 4min 45.57sec, set by herself on 2008, by doing 4min 35.91sec. (This was run on 16 Jun at a time of 9:15pm).

In the 3000m steeplechase event, Melinder Kaur's own National Record of 11min 04.14sec, set on Jan 01st August 2009, was broken to 10min 55.31sec. Merlinder Kaur also broke the 5000m record for Women Open by doing 17min 46.01sec.

The 3000m steeplechase Men Open event, finally Karthik Jayaraman got his games record of 9m 20.25sec from 9min 24.06 sec set by Vikkram a/l Sadasivam (2006). This came through the guidance of M. Ramachandran, my former compatriot and the coach of Karthik. With the gold medal from steeplechase, Karthik has a total of 3 gold medals. This feat was done with a span of 5 days.

On the 14/06, he got the first gold in 15min 18sec and on 15/06, he got his gold from 10000m race. With two days rest, on 17/Jun, Karthik ran the race that he had been waiting for, his favourite race, 3000m Steeplechase race. This is a phenomenal feat and very soon Karthik will be preparing for the SEA Games soon in 2011.

M. Ramachandran told me today in his own words," I will prepare him for next year SEA Games". "From now onwards he will only run 3000m SC and 5000m only." These are the words of wisdom from the former Malaysian long-distance runner and the coach of Karthik.

The recent competition shows that Malaysian runners have a lot of potential in getting many SEA Games gold for the next Games. The results look fantastic.
