Army Half-Marathon 2012

As I know, The Army Half Marathon started somewhere in the early 1990s. When did it really start is a thing that I was not aware of even now. All I want to say is that the race was not popular at that time. Hence, I did not run in Singapore but I ran in Malaysia as the competition was higher there. The prizes, although was good for the Army Half, it did not attract me as I wanted to run a good time to improve upon my time, if possible a sub - 1hr 11min. I attained this in Trengganu Half-Marathon 1992 doing a time of 1hr 10min 52sec while M. Ramachandran, the Malaysian best at that time, did 1hr 06min 59sec. Only when I was above 40 that I decided to start running in the Army Half marathon.

Anyway, coming back to the Army Half Marathon, it was a run in conjunction with SAFRA Singapore Bay Run and this has been a regular fixture in the running calendar since 1992.

It was reported in Channel News Asia recently that a total of 21,444 participants had registered last year for the half as compared to only 10,324 registered this year.

One of the reasons for this is that it's not compulsory for active servicemen to compete in the 21-km race this year. However, the SAFRA 10-km race has registered a 13 per cent increase in participants.

Participants at this year's Army Half Marathon will experience running a new route which goes through the newly-opened Bay South Gardens at Gardens by the Bay. The unique new route of the 21km route will make up about one kilometre.

It was reported in Channel News Asia that 40,000 runners have already registered for the event.

Flexifitness wishes every runner running in the half-marathon, 10km and 5km race all the best.
