Resilient Ashley Liew comes in second despite falling down twice.

I reached opposite Lau Pa Sat market at 4 45am to see Flexifitness runners run in the half-marathon and the 10km race. Some 70,000 people took part in this year's Army Half Marathon and SAFRA Singapore Bay Run. Most of the roads were diverted and I finally parked my car opposite Lau Pa Sat market. I reached the start point in 10min by brisk walking and found that Ashley was at the priority start as well, right in front of the start. I was assisting Ashley in stretching and told him to go for it. Our target time was 1hr 10min to 1hr 12min for the half-marathon, which he is capable of. The first race, the 21-kilometre Army Half Marathon, was flagged off at 5.15am.

Runners ran past the newly opened Bay South Garden at Gardens by the Bay as part of the new route. After the race, I had to park my car again in a nearby area at the Grand Hotel. As the road was diverted, I had to take some time to reach the finish point and finally, I reached it.

3 Africans runners ran past us who came in 1st, 2nd and third. Another two of them also ran passed. After some time, it was Ruiyong finishing. I was wondering where Ashley was. I realised that he should be back according to time. Ruiyong was first in an about 1hr 12min plus. Then, after some 2min, Ashley came in to finish. After the finish, he had to be brought in to the Medical post for an ankle injury. I saw Mok Ying Ren coming in third.

As I was waiting for Ashley to come to my spot, at the finish point, I found that he was not around. After some time I was aware that Ashley needed some attention

I had to abandon waiting for other of our Flexifitness runners and I started to look for Ashley. He was at the Medical Post attended by a medical doctor.

After about 20min wait, he came and I asked him about the race. He told me that he fell twice as the terrain, which was on a certain carpet, was found to be very slippery. However, with resilience, he carried on, after a bad fall, and after some time the pain vanished. Fortunately, the pain became more evident after a run, not earlier, else he had to stop the race. The doctor told Ashley to rest his leg for 3 days.

Anne Date came in first for the women open half-marathon race.

The next race that Ashley Liew will be running is the POSB 10km Run. He is the defending champion for this race.... more stories coming up on the race later.
