I met Kashken Ray Hodge last year. From the day I knew him till now he has been making a big improvement. He follows Coach Rameshon's training religiously and is a determined athlete. In the past, he was not running as fast as I know him. In fact, he was used to posting slower times during his secondary school days and was always hoping that one day he could be a fast runner.

Over a period of time, his 10km time of 1hr 06min in the Year 2011 has improved to 47min 55sec in July 2012 and subsequently has gone down to 42min 55sec in the Army Half-Marathon 2012. What was more interesting is that he showed me his Garmin watch which showed that he ran 10.7km instead of 10km. I saw all the splits and realised that the distance covered was 10.7km. That means that he could have posted a time of sub -40min if the route was 10km, and not longer.

Anyway, I found that his time was still the biggest improved time within a short span by a Flexifitness athlete The improvement was in fact tremendous. I gave him an interview as I felt that his story will be inspirational for everyone to know, especially for people who have been posting 1hr and above currently.

An Interview With Kashken Ray Hodge

What is the distance that you like to run?
I like to run 10km races and hopefully progress in time to come.

Why did you take part in this race?
I took part in this race to do a PB and because to rest of the team was taking part.

What was your 10km timing in the past?
2011- 1hr 6 mins, 22 July 2012 - 47.55.

What was your game plan before the race?
My game plan was to do a sub-40 min and if possible sub-39 min.

How was the split during the race?
My first km was 3.52. 5km-19.35, 8km-35.32, 10km(10.7km)- 42.55.

Now that you know that you have done a personal best time, how do you also feel about this?
I feel extremely happy and I would like to thank my family, team and Mr.Rameshon for supporting me through this journey. At this point, I would like to congratulate all Flexifitness runners for a good race today!! More to come!

How was the organization of the race?
The organisation should be improved. There were 2 main problems about the race. Firstly, at the 3km mark, the 10km and 21km shared the same route. This caused severe congestions and trying the dodge the crowd made me lose a lot of energy and made me lose momentum. Secondly, the race was 10.7km long. How are athletes going to improve with inaccurate distances? This problem has to be addressed. The only reason I know the race was 10.7km was because of my Garmin watch.

Any suggestion that you would like to make which could lead to an improvement in the organization of the race in future?
If they want to merge the 2 races, they should consider using 2 lanes instead of one. Also, water points should be larger as there were bottlenecks at points.

What is your next plan?
My plan is to focus on my upcoming promos which in 3 weeks time. After that, it's running full-time during the holidays.
