IAAF News - Centrowitz and Martinez Take Fifth Avenue titles
23/09/2012, Sunday
Matthew Centrowitz, 22, won the Fifth Avenue Mile Title from defending champion Bernard Lagat today. Somewhere towards the last 50m stretch of the race, Centrowitz overtook Lagat and won the race by a half-second in 3min 52.4sec; Olympic 1500m silver medallist Leo Manzano came in second with a time of 3min 53.1sec.
"I have to admit I keyed off Bernard," Centrowitz told reporters. "I love coming to New York — this was great. "My parents, my family, and lots of friends were here."
"I started pushing at 100 metres to go," said Lagat, standing with Centrowitz and Manzano afterwards. "I knew these two gentlemen were going to be in pursuit, but I wanted to give my best and run hard. At 50 metres to go, that great miler there" — he nodded to Centrowitz — "just passed me."
