Sri Sri Yoga - Health, Happiness and Prosperity and Improvement in Running performance

The founder of Sri Sri Yoga, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar came to Singapore to conduct a workshop at Shangri La Hotel yesterday 1/04/2012 to teach us on how to live happily and to live a diseaseless life.

I remember that part of the reason for me to do well in the marathon, in the past, especially doing 2hr 24min 22sec in Chiengmai, Thailand, was because of doing the Breathing Technique taught by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar to get myself energised and recover faster to do well in running.

Those who are interested are to sign up for this course by calling 90025821 Sumathy or e-mail Rameshon at m.rameshon@gmail.com to confirm your attendance for the course. The details of the course are listed below.

Importance of Sri Sri Yoga - Asanas, Breathing Technique, Meditation
Sri Sri Yoga is a celebration of the diversity in Yoga in a simple and joyful manner. We combine yoga essentials - breathing techniques, stretching and postures, meditation and relaxation, and yogic knowledge. By incorporating all these beautiful facets of yoga we are able to look deep beyond the level of the physical body and really sharpen our sensitivity and awareness of subtler levels of existence. The practice of Sri Sri Yoga cultivates a more healthy and happy lifestyle.

On a physical level, Yogic exercises strengthen, lengthen and replenish muscle tissues, which helps hold bones and align the whole body. Holding postures burns fat and reduces cholesterol. Yogic breathing brings more oxygen to the heart and nourishes the whole system. The breathwork also aids in reducing toxin levels in the body by expelling unwanted stresses.

Asanas
Asana is defined as "posture". Its literal meaning is "seat". Originally, the asanas served as stable postures for prolonged meditation. More than just stretching, asanas open the energy channels (nadis) and the energy centers (chakras) of the body. Asanas purify and strengthen the body, and focus the mind. Asana is one of the eight limbs of classical Yoga, which states that asana should be steady and enjoyable, firm yet relaxed.

When holding a yoga posture, make sure you can breathe slowly and deeply. Go to your edge in the posture, holding where you feel a good stretch and without pain, strain or fatigue.

Pranayama
Yoga breathing, or Pranayama, is the science of breath control. It consists of a series of exercises especially intended to meet the body's needs and keep it in vibrant health. Pranayama comes from the following words:

Prana - "life force" or "life energy"
Yama - "discipline" or "control"

Thus, Pranayama means "breathing techniques" or "breath control". Ideally, this practice of opening up the inner life force is not merely to take healthy deep breaths; it is intended for yoga practitioners to help and prepare them in their Meditation process.

Meditation
Meditation is creating the cessation of all thought. As thoughts dissipate, the mind becomes quiet, and we are able to be fully in the present moment. The techniques of meditation are simple and easy to learn. The benefits of a regular meditation practice include reduction of stress, tension, anxiety and frustration, as well as improved memory, concentration, inner peace and whole-body well-being.
