T Vias - My good old buddy. who helped me get good motor skill for running.

I met my primary school classmate by the name of Vias. In the past, I stayed at Kampung Bahru Road, at the base of Mount Faber and later on moved to Bukit Merah.  Vias was staying at Telok Blangah at that time.

Vias is now working as an aircraft engineer. He recounted to me on the days we used to play traditional games like sepak takraw and chap-teh. We used to play one versus one soccer most of the time and slowly developed our skills in soccer and games. Vias had a natural flair for soccer and was capable of playing for St Joseph's Institution. However, he was also focusing on studies and playing for school was not an important choice for him. He was in a good class then and his class-mates were academically inclined. I was most of the time playing games and hardly spend time on studies.

Hence, my formative years of acquiring skills came from playing games in primary school most of the time. I believe that the Fundamental Movement Skills were developed when I was very young. I attribute my success to my formative years in De La Salle Primary. Most of the games were played due to my interest in it. Endlessly, I could play games, although my studies suffered at that time. Later on, the resilience in sport gave me the confidence to get my degree and masters in studies. Hence, I believe that sports are important in life as well.

Coming back to the story on Vias, I would say that we slowly contacted less after primary school because of my great interest in running that was taking place after secondary three. Earlier on, my friend Ow Kok Meng was doing his best to pester me into running but I was into soccer a lot. St Joseph's Institution was at that time a top school for soccer.

A week back, I realised that Vias still in Telok Blangah. He was asking for assistance for his daughter to lose weight and I told about Ashok Kumar who has lost his weight from 97kg to 91.5kg within two months. I told him that many are looking for a 'press button' attitude to lose weight. This, I believe, is not a good idea at all. People are willing to part money to see for weight loss through easy methods. After losing weight, I see that most of them gain weight over a period of time. The keyword is exercise first and nutrition second. I told him that the natural method is to exercise more by jogging and running. He agreed to this and with firm resolution told me that his daughter will join the weight management programme.

He told me that he would like his daughter not to get diabetes, high blood pressure etc. Vias agreed that exercising is the natural way of losing weight. I also believe that by exercising, the pancreas, which produces the insulin, becomes more efficient and this will prevent diabetes. Studies have shown this to be true.
