Amarjeet Kaur - Likes to exercise forever

Picture 1 - Lindy Yap, Amarjeet Kaur and Michelle

I met Amarjeet, who had once trained with me at a time when I was assisting Lindy Yap to do a sub-4hours. Amarjeet still remembers the time she did some intensive training around the early 1990s. While Lindy Yap improved from 4hr plus hours to sub 4hrs, Amarjeet trained alongside her once. Lindy, over a period of about a year, improved her time by doing 3hr 51 and then over time, after finishing her exams, did 3hr 49min with a month's training.

While Lindy Yap did 3hr 49min, Amarjeet did 4hr 03min. She thanked me yesterday for assisting her and told me that that time is still the personal best time until now. I felt honoured to hear this.

As she had just turned 60plus, Amarjeet told me to train her up. I asked what is her goal and she gave her answer in the form of an interview.

She told me not to put her down in the blog post. I told her that it will be a good idea to encourage the young ones to exercise for life. Moreover, I also know another friend of hers by the name of Satpal, 64, still exercising, although not running, she is still swimming more often. Satpal is still working and as I know her, she is a very enthusiastic person in sports.

Both of them are relations of Harpreet Singh, who at secondary 4, did 14min 47sec for a 4.8km race at MacRitchie around the late 1980s.

An interview with Amarjeet Kaur

Why did you take up the marathon in the past?
I believe that running a marathon can bring confidence in a person. Mental strength increases through this.

What are you doing now in career?
My children are all married. Since I am free at home, to keep the mind alert and working. I have turned to do some part-time work as a dental nurse in order to have good mental health.

Do you enjoy your work?
Yes, I enjoy this job very much.

Are you exercising enough?
We used to have a very active group and we were running all the time, now I am doing just walking, possible 3 times of 7km per session.

What is your future goal?
To complete a marathon, that is my main goal.

Do you have any role model?
It is Mr Chan Meng Hui, 81, still running without any injury. He also wrote a book on 'Run Your Life', an inspiration person indeed.

Tell us something about your children in sports?
My elder son actually played hockey for Singapore.

What is your message to the young?
Keep exercising and enjoy sports and games. It is never too late to exercise.
