Michelle Kwan - Sharing Of Valuable Lessons To Greatness

Picture 1 - A smile after winning major championships medals

Michelle Kwan won 2 Olympic medals, 5 World Championships medals and 9 National Championships medals. She came to Hwa Chong to share with the students and sportsmen on values that she had cultivated and learnt for attaining excellence. I had no notes to take down, hence, I wrote all the salient points in my handphone. I find that some of her experiences will be valuable for many to learn from.

One Step At A Time
She told that there is short-term goals and long-term goals. Her parents told her to chart out not just goals in the future but also for the day itself. That showed to me that we should put in our 100% in whatever we do and not do anything less. She told that there are daily goals that need to be achieved that led her to finally achieve the ultimate goal. In a way, these goals had somehow made her come to Hwa Chong.

Focus On Correcting Mistakes
On this, Michelle told that she had to do difficult stunts sometimes and there is no running away from it. If one does not feel comfortable in doing this, then attaining excellence is not an easy thing to do. She told the audience that the one that makes people to be amazed in her figure skating is on doing something unique. Hence, most part of the time in figure skating she usually spends her time doing difficult things that she had to do. In life, she also realised that by doing that in the past, she has learnt to do things that she is not interested in. She has put this practice in life, studies and work as well.

Stay Focused Even During Injury
When she was injured, she told that she had to still train for major competitions. She told that there was a time where she spent 2 hours for the routine that will optimise her training at least and also that do not increase the injury. Discipline to not to do less and more was very important. She told that rarely she got an injury in the past. Over time, she used to increase her training and maximise the training when the injury was getting better. Slowly, she was able to increase the time and get back to the same routine and go for the major competition.

Cultivate One's Passion
She told that everyone is good for something and they should go and find out which they are good for and if they like it they should pursue and achieve excellence. It is her belief that everyone should do what they love rather than what they don't love. At the age of 30, she feels that because of her figure skating, she is given to meet people and give a talk. She is appreciative in taking figure skating.

Dedication
Michelle told the audience that with the love to do something one will be able to dedicate the time to achieve excellence. It was found that she trains from 3am in the morning and go to school and she told that the whole day training takes up to 6hrs. She believes that with dedication a person can train and learn good values in sports.

Singapore's Olympic Medal
To a question from the audience, she told the student that they should think of being the first to achieve it by going for the Olympics and win medals. From her conversation, I felt that obstacles are always there and it is up to the individual to cross all obstacle and train with dedication and achieve it.

Current Goals
She told that there are other things she is doing now and she would like to keep on learning, this is her prime motivation as for now. She is learning to play golf. There are other things that she is doing also and she feels that she is enjoying it a lot. She is interested to learn new things which are different. She is currently doing courses in Policy Studies. She told that she believes in meeting neighbours, overseas countries people and learn about other culture.

At the end of the talk, Michelle was presented a souvenir which in on J-TIGERR by Dr Hon Chiew Weng.
