Michelle Wing Kwan - Excellence by Figure skating on the ice.

Picture 1 - Excellence and smile, combining together while performing ice skating at an international level.

Michelle Kwan is 30 years of age and she was born on 7th July 1980, in Torrance, California. Her feats were: she won two medals in the Olympics, she is 5 times World Champion and also a 9 times National Champion. Sometimes I used to see her on the television and I was very impressed with her artistic movement in ice Skating.

Today she gave a talk to the Hwa Chong Institution students and Nanyang Girl School girls. I also saw some fragments of Singapore Chinese Girls School students. Michelle Kwan gave s short talk, and it was proceeded by Mr Micheal Dees talk. Finally, the forum ended with a dialogue with Michelle Kwan answering the questions posed by the students.

Picture 2 - Michelle Kwan competing and winning medals at international level.

The reason, I decided to do this dialogue is because of the nature of the sport which is anaerobic and aerobic demands combined in this sport. It can be similar to a marathon. Michelle told the audience that she needed to wake up at 3am and train. She had to look after her education as well. Around 6hrs of training was done throughout life as an intensive skater.

Picture 3 - Doing very difficult stunts were part of her routine and there was no running away from this to achieve excellence.

At first, she spoke to the audience on the first thing she had learnt from the coach was to experience falling. From the age of 5 years to age 17, she told that that was what happened during training, especially when she had to do some complex skill performance. She also told on dedicating oneself to the sport to achieve success was important. Her talk lasted about 15min and was taken over by Mr Michael Dee, a diplomat from the USA who was instrumental in bringing Michelle to Singapore to share some of her experiences as a world-class skater.

Later, Michael told us about his own experience as a skater. He told us that he was very fond of skating and spent a lot of hours in skating and told that he dedicated his time in it and enjoyed every moment of the time in this sport. He told us on how in one session he had to talk to the Singapore school principals on encouraging youth to engage in what they are passionate about. With the love of the sport, he said that they will be successful in life as well. Michael talked to us very passionately on his love for the sport and told that there are a lot of things that he learnt from this sport.

Picture 4 - After all the hard work, fame is the reward. However, she seems not to be attached to this.

At one point, he even told that his mother was an ice skater as well. He told that the mother's age is currently 83 and she had been teaching skating for 60 years. There was sudden applause from the audience for this feat from this elderly passionate lady. An admirable thing to do, indeed! Michael told that where ever he goes, many of them keep asking him on ice skating than anything else. This made me feel the same as, many when they talk to me, most of the time, keep asking me on my running. Hence, Michael told that it was worth spending all the hours for skating since the main gist in his life is all on skating. With that, the dialogue between the students and Michelle Kwan began.

Picture 5 - Excellence is the outcome of a lot of practise for people to appreciate and be overwhelmed by the audience on her superb performance.

I will write this in another post as the dialogue has many essential messages which will help youth to strive for excellence.
