Although Kenya's Geoffrey Mutai was not selected for London Olympics, he won Sunday's Berlin Marathon with a time of two hours, four minutes and 15 seconds.

He was coming close to breaking the world record of 2:03:38 set here by fellow Kenyan Patrick Makau in 2010 in Berlin.

"For sure the record was possible but I had some problems with my leg," the 30-year-old winner told reporters.

Mutai was able to win his training partner, Dennis Kimetto, by one second.

This was the first time that Kimetto is entering a marathon. 19-year-old Geoffrey Kipsang, another newcomer, took the top three positions to make the marathon an all Kenyan podium 1, 2 and 3 finish for men.

This win was some consolation for Mutai, who didn't make the selection for the London Olympics, AFP noted.

Mutai at the same time has his own the fastest marathon time ever recorded, with 2:03:02 at the 2011 Boston Marathon said the AP, which is an unofficial world record ever recorded by any man.
