Chicago Marathon - Cold Weather was 4 to 7 degrees centigrade

I saw Dr Ben Tan and Dr Benny Goh doing their intensive training in CCAB, MOE track, in the morning. They were doing specific workouts on the track once a week for Chicago Marathon 2012 which was held on Sunday 07/10/2012.

While his friend Jonathan Kang did a 3hr 08min, achieving a personal best time in the marathon, both Dr Benny Goh and Dr Ben Tan did 2hr 51min and 3hr 12min, respectively. It was Dr Benny's 5th time doing a sub - 3hr and 3 times doing a sub 2hr 52min in his life. It was a big achievement. Our flexifitness athlete, Charlotte, not her real name as she does not like herself to be mentioned, did 3hr 54min 27sec, attaining her lifetime personal best at the age of 42.

I find that all the timings were respectable.

Dr Ben Tan told me that the weather was very cold. While the weather was advantageous for the faster runners, it was not disadvantageous for the four of them. If the weather was about 10 to 18 degrees centigrade, the timings would have been much faster. It was like surviving the weather rather than surviving the marathon.

I remember running in Biwako, Japan, in the 1st Asian Marathon Championships, held on Mar 1988, where I came in 7th overall among Asian runners. The weather was around 13 to 15 degrees centigrade at first. I did 1hr 17min 07 for the first part of the half-marathon  At the last 10km, the weather was around 5 to 10 degrees. I was suffering from the cold weather. I ran very slow 50 min plus at the last 10km and managed 2hr 46min. several Asian runners stopped in the race, even my friend Lee Kar Lun of Hong Kong. One top runner Naik Sagala from Indonesia was following the top runners at the half-way mark and stopped later and was actually hospitalised due to the weather.

I am hoping to interview Dr Benny and Dr Ben Tan in a blog post. Watch out for that.
