Learning to run faster - The benefits of seeing a chiropractor.

There are a variety of things that one could do to run faster. One of the ways to run faster is to have a good posture before you start running. Having a good posture should start from young and not when we are old. However, when we are old, there is a short cut to improving our posture. It is by seeing a chiropractor. The chiropractor will be able to align the body so that one can function better.

The first thing that Percy Cherutty, a former great coach, taught to runners was on the importance of good posture. Without good posture, one may improve in running but will not be able to succeed in achieving excellence in running. Moreover, I believe that excellence is a process to reach the top.

By having good posture, one will have increased lung capacity as compared to not having one. A good posture will also ensure a good running economy. Hence, good posture increases vitality in the body.

In life, due to work stress, we lose our posture due to our poor lifestyle habits. This has got to change. I feel that there are two ways to change. One is to do yoga type of exercises or to see a chiropractor once or twice a year, at least. In fact, if you ask me, I would say that to do both is better if one wants to excel in running. In running, we must live life to the maximum if we want to excel.

Having said that, to know more on chiropractic practice, it would be good to hear from Dr Kelvin Ng, Ashley Liew"s chiropractor on the essense and benefits of seeing a chiropractor. I have assigned myself to interview him on this topics and was thinking of hearing this out from Ashley Liew, who has more than two years of experience of going to see a chiropractor. Ashley has been without injury since, thus, improving his running times as well as running form and to not getting injured.

Do you visit your chiropractor often?

During intensive training season, I visit Dr Kelvin Ng weekly to get adjusted. Otherwise during off-season, I can afford to spread out my adjustments as a form of maintenance-care.

What kind of injuries have you gotten from running?

Thankfully because of regular chiropractic care, efficient running form, and closely supervised training structure, I have avoided major injuries runners associate with “over-training”. Of course, I suffer the occasional accidental painful trauma, like my sprained ankle sustained during the Army Half Marathon.

However, it is not uncommon for me to feel “stuck” in particular body parts especially after intensive training period(s). I rarely classify such feelings of discomfort as “painful”, but it is bad enough to reduce my mobility and flexibility. I believe many runners experience this too, but go on to brush it off as typical training-related strain, not realizing there could be an underlying problem like a bone misalignment. Such misalignments may not necessarily be attributed to running itself; things like improper sitting posture, a previous accident, or even work stress are sometimes culprits. Misalignments tend to impinge on the surrounding nerves, inflame surrounding connective tissue, and interfere with signal transmissions between the brain and affected body cells.

How does a chiropractor help in recovering from such injuries or discomfort?

Through gentle chiropractic adjustments, the misaligned vertebrae or joint are unlocked. I typically feel a sense of relief as my body regains greater range of motion. More importantly, interference to the affected nerves is removed, allowing the body to efficiently self-heal. This allows me to be on the path to recovery much faster so I can be ready for my next training. Chiropractic is a natural and effective approach that addresses the fundamental problem (e.g. misaligned vertebrae) rather than just the symptom of that problem (e.g. joint pain). For example, it is likely that the root cause of a knee injury may be a misalignment in the spine or neck, because the musculoskeletal system throughout the body is well-connected. Left untreated, continued impact from running would only exacerbate the problem.

How can a chiropractor help in terms of avoiding long-term injury?

In addition to its reactive approach to treating injury (e.g. my right ankle sprain), I find chiropractic even more important for its preventive approach. A chiropractor can detect and treat a misalignment before the condition deteriorates to a “painful” stage, by then which major damage is already done (and is unlikely to be un-done). Pain is not a timely indicator of when a fundamental problem arises. Chiropractic ultimately deals with your body’s nervous systems (Central and Peripheral), which in turn affect efficient body functioning at every cell level. Thus, regular chiropractic care allows your body to express its highest health potential.

When is the best time for an athlete to see a chiropractor? Do the young or old need it more?

Everyone should consider seeing a chiropractor! It does not just apply to those have suffered acute injuries. Misalignments generally occur in everyone, even athletes that feel healthy. It is just the degree of severity that differs. Misalignments if left un-treated may only manifest in a deteriorated condition at an older age. This is why it is also important for children to get their spine analyzed to detect presence of scoliosis before worsening permanent spine curvature. Even newborn babies can get adjusted by chiropractors trained in a specialized technique; it may surprise you to note that our first misalignments actually occur during the birthing process! Older people also need regular chiropractic care as an effective preventive and reactive approach, rather than living with prolonged discomfort or the negative side effects of drugs.

Are you able to run faster by seeing a chiropractor?

Yes! There is a strong correlation with my numerous personal bests and my adoption of chiropractic into my lifestyle since 2010. It is not a wonder that most of the world’s top runners also receive chiropractic adjustments. The direct consequence of seeing a chiropractor is having my back, neck, and other connected bones fully aligned, as well as increased mental alertness. The indirect consequence is more long-term: a healthy nervous system results in my boosted immune system (I have only fallen sick once since 2010), a smooth brain-body communication system, and efficient functioning of all other systems (circulatory, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, etc.).

Is it really worth it to go to see a chiropractor? What is your opinion based on your experience?

Having come to know about chiropractic since 2010, I have gained an immense appreciation of the philosophy that “health is wealth”. Chiropractors are specialists of the spine and neck, the misalignment of which causes so many problems ranging from headaches, fatigue, injuries, neck pain, and even disease. Being a chiropractic patient myself, as well as seeing the progress of many other patients, I know that chiropractic care is effective and something of long-term value. Just as incorporating a good diet, regular exercise, and healthy relationships into our lifestyle maximize our physical and emotional well-being, so too should chiropractic.
