Samantha Dawn Jacob - Strives for improvement and progress all the time

As I know Dawn, who is in her early 20s and working as a nurse, is known to be very good in her sprints and not for her long-distance running. Her dad, who was my classmate in the past, by the name of Johnson Jacob, our blogpost hero who took part in the 250km Sahara Desert Challenge 2010 with Mika Kume and Christian Stauffer, was motivating her to run longer distances in our programme. I believe that he was doing this to mentally stretch her far.

As for me, I told him her dad that it would be good for her to do sprints and not long distance. He felt that she will improve over time. In the short-term, it was very difficult to improve her and she was running at a pace which was close to walking pace. I felt that the reason for her to move was because of more white fast-twitch muscle fibre and few slow red twitch muscle in her body.

She could do a 14 to 15-sec average timing for her 100m time trial and was able to beat all females in our group. Only when it comes to long-distance running, she would struggle throughout her run, in fact, right from the start of the run.

With a lot of determination and courage, Dawn kept at it in doing our Tuesday and Thursday nightly 7 to 9 30pm sessions. She missed some sessions as she had to do her shift work. However, rain or shine, she will always be around to train where there is time to train.

What impressed me was that her persistent training mentality had finally enabled her to do a 1hr 37min in the 12km Zoo Run as compared to her 1hr 38min and 1hr 45min range of time she did for Great Eastern Run 2012 and Shape Run 2012. Now, she could run 2km extra with what she used to do for 10km instead. I was finally glad to hear about her improvement and congratulated her when I came to hear of this on the day of the race.

Having said, as she is our own runner, I decided to interview her to motivate people to run and be active even when you are a sprinter or a sedentary person or one who has been going through a period of not improving.
