5000 - Stiff Challenge is the name of the game for 5000m race.

The favourite to win the 5000m race is predicted to be Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot Masai of Kenya who not only has a personal best time of 14min 40.87sec but also has done this time for this year itself. There is going to be a very tough challenge as Ethiopian Meserat Defar is also running the race. Meserat has a personal best time of 14min 29.52sec. However, she has done a lifetime best time of 14min 12.88sec for the 5000m race. Hence, Meserat may be able to produce what she had done in the past and be a great challenger to Vivian. The other gold medal prospect runner for this race is Linet Masai who has done a season-best time of 14min 32.905sec.

Other very strong contenders include Ethiopian Sentayehu Ejigu who has a season-best time of 14min 31.66sec, Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet who has a season-best time of 14min 45.31sec and finally we have Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba ( 14min 37sec) and Kenyan Mercy Cherono (14min 35min) to contend for the gold medal. The competition is going to be very stiff.

There are many women who have done sub-15min in the past and are running in the race.
