Sathiavathi - Running for joy made her to reduce weight.

Sathiavathi, 45, used to walk 10km per day to work for the past 15 years. Her weight was 82.7kg and she could only maintain it through walking.

She found that her knee was giving way and the injury was getting worse, so she had to stop her walking. Hence, Her fat levels in the hand, leg and trunk area started to increase and she could not stop it.

Over time, her weight went up to 87.4kg. She knew that she could not control her weight and it may even increase. Two years back, she was given a fat scan by her doctor. Her visceral fat level went up to 18. Normal visceral fats in a person is 0-9 and very fit runners have a visceral fat of 0-2. Sathiavathi's visceral fat level of 18 was very high and showed that she had to somehow do some form of exercise.

Coach Rameshon's advice- If visceral fat is high or very high, one can easily get diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems. The fat found below the skin is not as harmful as visceral fat (fat that wraps around the inner organs in the tummy area). Fat in the tummy is toxic and one must do all one can to reduce the fat levels there.

As for Satiavati- After one year with Flexifitness, she was training by walking and doing some form of alignment stretching and some alignment drills to correct her walking and running gait. At first, her knee got better. However, because of her job commitments - she found that her weight did not go down and she was still injured and had to miss several training sessions of Flexifitness training.

In the second year, her own daughter Sara, 15, had improved in running and her weight had gone down by 12kg. Sara had a knee injury like her mother's. Due to adopting proper running form, Saranniya's knee problems vanished. Sathiavathi had thought all along that the knee problem was a genetic problem in her family. All her children who are in Flexifitness running group do not have knee problems anymore as they used to have it earlier on. They were taught to walk, run and do stretching properly. Sara insisted on her mother training more consistently on the programme monitored by Coach Rameshon.

With commitment on her part in the subsequent 6 months, her weight dropped to 77.0kg. (This weight was just taken yesterday). That was a 22 pound (close to 10kg) drop in her weight. Also, due to regular stretching, she was able to come out of injury and was able to bring down fat levels in her leg, hands and trunk. Her overall flexibility had improved remarkably. In the past, she could not bend down to touch the floor. Now, she can do it easily.

Many runners in our group commented on her significant weight loss as seen by her physique. By following the training given by our Head Coach, Coach Rameshon, Sathiavathi has finally brought down her visceral fat from 18 to 12.

In the past, I could not see her taking part in running and if I saw her, she would only be walking. Last Tuesday, I saw her for the first time running 400m x 20 in 2min 30sec, with 30sec to recover. She used to do 400m x 20 in 3min 30sec (walking pace) with a minute and a half to recover.

Her story is inspiring and I hope by featuring her, many out there will feel inspired and get motivated.

This is the first time, she will be taking part in 10km to improve her time from 2hr 10min to at least 1hr 30min, in the POSB Run 2014. We wish her well and would get her interview out asap. Watch out for it!
