Coffee - Inflammation and Performance

Before sharing with you my SEA Games race where I did 2h 24min 22sec in Thailand, I would share on some important points on caffeine.

There is evidence that there are advantages in taking in coffee, tea, coke, milo, chocolate, red bull and other caffeinated drinks before a race. It is from my experience and it is in research as well with conclusive results

Dr Teh, who was at that time working with Singapore Sports Council (SSC) as a medical doctor, gave us a pre-SEA Games talk. He spoke on other topics plus on caffeine etc. I was training Koo Chin Poo at that time. Koo Chin Poo did 2hr 41min for the Gold Coast Marathon 2003 and did 2hr 39min in the 2003 Vietnam SEA Games in that same year. As I was his coach, I was invited to the pre-SEA Games talk.

We were given the contents of caffeinated drinks. I did my own reading as well. Compared to coffee, the caffeine content in tea can be 10 times lower. As compared to coffee, red bull has 3 times more caffeine.

Too much of drinking of caffeinated drink could cause inflammation of the bones and joints, sleep disorders and elevated of heart-rate. In the past, I used to discuss with runners and other people who were interested in this topic. Over time, some studies have shown some results that caffeine can cause inflammation.

Hence, it is important to place a limit on coffee. Some studies have shown that coffee has anti-oxidants and it can prevent certain cancers. A person who drinks 2 cups a day needs to drink more water because of the diuretic effect of coffee. One also needs to sleep more. If not, one will get tired from the caffeine effect, doing more work and the body getting more tired from performing an intense bout of exercise; whether it be cycling, running etc.
