Pramod Kukanur's Personal Report On Exercise As A Lifetime Pursuit.

My age 27 and I am from Hubli, Karnataka, near Bangalore. Since I am from a traditional Brahmin family, I only consume vegetarian food.

When I was young I was studying for 10 years in St. Marris Kannada medium school.  From 1999 -2001 I joined PC Jabins Science College for my pre-university studies. At Hubli, Manipal University, I finally did my MSC in Computers.

When I came here to work in Singapore in the year 2008, I was weighing 80kg. Over time, I was weighing 86kg. Most of the days, I used to eat Veg Briyani. I was also taking Maggie Noodle for fast food. It was in Sept 2008 that I found that I was getting bigger. I was also eating a lot of junk food.

Another reason for me to keep putting on weight is because of the lifestyle that I was leading. I was not eating properly according to time. Over time, I was feeling upset about my weight. I was finding for exercise places in Singapore and I was not familiar. Eventually, I met Rameshon. While I was doing a once in a blue moon exercise at Mt Faber, I met him. I was interested to exercise but I did not know how to go about.

I also had a painful sensation on my back of the foot, near the heel area. I did not know who can me to get me out of this sustained injury. I badly wanted this injury to go. I tried seeing a doctor but he was giving me a painkiller.

It was around Dec 2009. I had an interest in losing weight. I just started talking to him and I realised that this person had an athletic physique. I was interested in how he was able to maintain this sportsman type of physique.

I decided to ask some questions and he came forward to give me some suggestions. Since he was quoting his message from several researches, I realised that I would like to keep in touch with this person who is voluntary in helping and speak endlessly when it comes to exercise for life.

Rameshon invited me to different places in Singapore to do exercises. We became exercising parters. He was bringing me to more natural settings like the East Coast Parkway, MacRitchie and Parks which link Mt Faber all the way to Science Park. I allocated a time to exercise and he brought me for trekking. He also introduced me to some circuits that he used to do in his University. He also adapted the training to my fitness level. From fitness zero, I was getting fitter. I was trekking successively once a week from 5km to 8km. Over time, I moved up to 10km and went up to 15km walks. Eventually, once I was able to walk about 40km and I enjoyed the walks thoroughly.

Other days, I used to do a 20min to 30min run. Over a period of 6months, my weight went down to 75kg. I was happy and my heel problem was also going. Probably because of the way to walk and run was taught by Rameshon. I was not getting pain anymore and the pain vanished. I learned about shoes through the discussions I had with Rameshon.

Over time, I just felt like running and did not feel like walking. Rameshon told me that the Maggie noodle soup is not good for the body and it is ok to take Maggie noodle once in a while. However, he insisted to me Maggie Masala, specially made noodle sold in Serangoon Road, and told me the benefits of consuming. He told me that Maggie Masala does also provide good immunity to the body.  The spices help prevent injuries. I started purchasing this item and felt good over time. I was afraid that due to Monosodium in Maggie noodle sold here which could lead me to hair loss.

Above all, my confidence that I was losing over a period of time was starting to come back. I felt good. about myself and started to exercise regularly and consume food regularly and according to mealtime.

Finally, I told Rameshon that what I have experienced I would like others to experience. I told Rameshon to come out with a blog to help others. Immediately, he told me that this will be a good service but he did not know how to create. As an IT person, I find that I also did not know. I started to adventure on the blog and told Rameshon to key in the password and the blog started.

My advice to everyone is I believe that health is wealth. Even though a person can be rich, without good health he is still considered poor as he cannot reap the benefits of being rich and health is also considered by Indians as one of the forms of 8 wealth. Success is one form of wealth. I have learnt a valuable lesson not to revert myself to an unhealthy lifestyle.

I have learnt a valuable lesson to continue exercise and would do this throughout my life so that muscles and bone remain. I was shocked to hear from Rameshon that if you don't exercise, at the age of 70 we can lose about 30% of the muscle. This muscle will disappear and it will never come back any more. In order to retard the ageing process, I realised that exercise is very important.

Finally, I initiated this blog to Rameshon so that people take to eat a healthy diet, exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle. Also, in the pursuit of getting promoted etc and work very hard, it is advisable to remember to take stock of what we are eating.

I realised that fruits and vegetables are very important in life and that eating healthy will prevent diseases like diabetes, heart problems like coronary heart diseases, cancer etc.

The sad thing is IT people don't get a chance to exercise. They sit too long on the seat. I feel that all the more they should exercise and I wish everyone in the pursuit of wealth not to forget about health.

As Rameshon is doing weight management program professionally, before I go to India on 31st May, I told him to put his company on this blog and he relented to this after some persuasion from me. I have also got a job in India and am going back hoping that Rameshon and his wife would visit India at my place one day.

Finally, I would like to thank Rameshon for all his help he has given me and hope that others will benefit from his blog as well.

Rameshon e-mail is m.rameshon@gmail.com  on weight management service. Anyone having problem having injuries can still e-mail him for suggestions and advice.

Brendan Lee - Sacrifices Standard Chartered Marathon for Phuket Half - Iron man race.

Brendan Lee came in 9th in last year's Standard Chartered Marathon, Singapore, in front of Lim Thow Wee. Both runners did well considering the terrain that they had to counter. For this year, Brendan became the vice-president of Singapore Management University triathlon team. I am coaching him and he is getting faster, over time, in running. While he is progressing very well in his running, he has seen progress in swimming as well.

In Bintan Triathlon, Brendan came in as the champion last weekend and I thought that is a good idea to feature him. His form is good as compared to the past and I feel that he is capable of achieving sub - 2hr 50min in 2-3 weeks time if he is given a marathon. In fact, I believe right he may be able to do it already.

Having said that, I believe that the best way to know him is to interview him to find out his directions in running and triathlon.

Picture 1 - Brendan Lee from SMU wins for his age group in Bintan Triathlon 2011

Give us some details on this race?
The race was Bintan Triathlon in the Olympic Distance. The race is quite different from races in Singapore as the route is a lot more hilly and the race starts at 2pm, making it very hot.

How is your training go for this race?

I would say that training didn't really go according to plan as I am on internship and it is quite hard to get used to training after an entire day at work. As such, I had to have more easy training days and I did not get many long runs in.

Are you happy?
Overall, I'm rather satisfied with my race especially for the swim. Swimming is my weak discipline and I expected to lose at least 5 minutes to my teammates that are better swimmers. Thanks to my teammate, Ben, who looked after me during the swim, I only lost a couple of minutes. As I went really hard during the bike leg to catch up, I started the run leg almost cramping and had to slow down to finish the run without cramping. I should have taken in more sodium during the race I guess.

What was your target for this race?
This is actually my first race at this distance so I just wanted to do a good race and try for top 3.

Are you running in the Standard Chartered Marathon, Singapore?

No. I intend to represent my school for the Phuket half-ironman race which falls on the same day as the SCSM this year.

Will you be running any more marathons this year?

Depending on availability, maybe 1 marathon this year.

Any obstacles that you are facing?

My obstacles will be due to work as it is tiring and it is not easy to take time off to go for overseas races. I am still trying to adapt to training in all 3 sports under different coaches. But I think I am slowly making progress and I hope to improve my swim to another level soon. Running wise, Mr Ram has a program to maintain my speed and endurance with lesser sessions. So that it is good for me.

What is your goal for the year 2011, your biggest goal?
I decided to dedicate this year towards triathlon as I am the vice president of the Singapore Management University Aquathlon team. My ultimate goal is the Phuket half ironman where I hope to beat the time I set during the Aviva half ironman in Singapore. The course there is very hilly and teammates who did it last year have mentioned the need to walk up the hills as it was too steep to cycle.

Defar vs Cheruiyot in Oslo 5000m – Running in the Samsung Diamond League

Picture 1 - Defar, is one of the favourites to win the 5000m race in Oslo

Defar has done a 14min 16.63sec in 5000m before Tirenesh Dibaba broke the former's World Record to 14min 11.15sec, which is the present record. Defar is an Olympic gold medallist, World Championships gold medallist and is also a four-time winner of the World indoor 3000m. Kenya's Defar's competitor Cheruiyot has a time of 14.22.51which is near to the World record!

Cheruiyot has progressed in her running time from her performance in Bislett in 2007. Subsequently, she became the 5000m World champion in 2009 and also won the World Cross Country title in Punta Umbria, Spain. In the Samsung Diamond League meeting in Shanghai, a few days ago, she ran a 61-second final lap and emerged victorious in the 5000m women open event.

The women’s 5000m has attracted a very high-quality field with runners like the World 10,000m champion Linet Masai of Kenya,  Kenyan Sylvia Kibet. From Ethiopia, we have Sentayehu Ejigu and former African Champion Meselech Melkamu ensuring a great day to watch the Kenyan-Ethiopian challenge.

Ashley's Target for the Gold Coast - Right on Target

Today, I realised that some mistakes that Ashley was doing, while he runs, is still of being corrected. It was a good day for training as Jeevanesh has been sick for the past one or two weeks. The rest of the runners are hoping to do a sub-7min 30sec for the 2.4km NAPFA. I feel that in a month's time Jeevanesh should be doing a sub 7min if everything goes well. His challenge is to do a sub-15min 40sec. I feel that all the more Jeeva should aim for a 6min 40 to 50sec for the 2.4km. During Nationals Track and Field I realised that Jeeva was good for running road and trails. This weakness has been corrected as he is getting faster over time by doing twice per week on the track. Today he was asking for more training and intensity. This is good. There is terrain specificity going on now for him.

Now that he has attained a record in national schools' cross-country, he has turned his attention to the track. He is getting very comfortable with the track and it looks like his speed is picking up as he did not focus on this for keeping his alert eye on breaking the cross-country record.

Picture 1 - Shows Jeeva staying in the air for long, in fact, it is considered very long

As for Ashley, to do a sub-2hr 36min should not be a problem from the timing that he is posting. So long he doesn't fall sick, or get injured or get proper rest, he is capable of achieving. However, from the timing that he is posting recently, he is getting faster. He should be doing near 2hr 30sec. Over time things will tell whether this can be confirmed.

Picture 2 - Ashley also stays in the air for long but not as bad as Jeeva's. A correction is taking place for both and today they showed some improvement. The timing also shows it.

Right now, I see that there are some problems in the running technique. I am now evaluating and observing the way both of them run. I found out that both are staying on the air for long. This is good news as to when they keep improving on this they will go much faster.

I told the still training, Mun Yong Liang to tell his story on how he won the 5000m race in Hwa Chong Track and Field race. This is a good sign for anyone who wants to take up running and may find that they may be good in it after all.
