Great Britain's top athletes were controlling the middle distance track events during the 80s. From left to right is Steve Ovett, Steve Cram and Sebastion Coe, respectively. Sebastion Coe broke the world record with a time of 1min 41.73 and it stayed unbroken for 16 years until the advent of Kipketer who improved the time to 1min 41.11sec in 1997.

A Running Session on Middle Distance With Kipketer
Wilson Kipketer had just conducted a course in middle distance running in Singapore. He conducted a professional sharing session with about 10 coaches, 10 teachers, 80 young athletes and about 15 young adult athletes on how to run efficiently.

On Technique

When it comes to technique, he told that, when we run, we should not bring the head in and bringing the shoulders inwards during the run. Another mistake cited by him was that some runners 'sit' while they run. In other words, it means that there should be an extension of the leg while you are striding during the run. The best way, he says, is to feel relaxed and easy while a person runs.

In order to not place stress on the knees and the lower back, Kipketer advised us not to land on the heel but on the forefoot.

Picture Three - Relaxed and Natural Way is Economical For Running.

On Workout/s

He told us that if a person has to do a workout, which one to throw out or collapse on the floor, it means that a person is doing too much in the training, especially during a workout. Workouts should be hard, but if you are a well-conditioned athlete, you will be better able to handle the training. After finishing a workout, a person should not feel nausea, dizzy and get out of breath, it simply means that over-training may have taken place. A person may give up running overtime. If the person does not give up now, maybe he/she may give up in the near future. The answer to this is to avoid overdoing something.

Picture 4 - Kipketer reiterates that a workout can be hard but not too tough until the mind goes bonkers.

On Food

He said that the elephants consume only vegetables but are found to be very strong. On the other hand, tigers eat meat and are found to be strong also. Hence, he says that balancing the diet is the correct answer to performing well in running.

Kipketer surprised us by informing us that his grandfather had lived for some 138 years old or so. Hence, Kipketer told the audience that it is better to try out on food and do the research ourselves to see the difference between the good ones and those which are not good. He advised us that it is alright to go to the internet to check on this to ascertain the truth. He also told us to be selective with some websites and told us that not all that we find in the web are informational.

Kipketer astounded us by telling us that he did not take any form vitamin, mineral and trace element pill. However, he did mention that if a person drinks coke, it would be advisable to drink this very rarely. He told that at the age of 13, he only took coke once within a year.

Picture 5 - Singapore's Weather

He told that the weather in Singapore is fine as compared to the place where he is living now. He believes that if a person trains hard and be consistent in training, they will do well.

On Massage

When a person reaches 18 years and above, Kipketer believes that getting a massage are found to be beneficial. As for those younger than 18 years of age, he says that there is no necessity for getting any form of massage.

On Winning

He mentioned that the attitude of a person during training sessions is vital. He believes that it is within the reach of a person to do well or not. In short, he believes that the ambition of the person is important.  If there is no ambition, then there is no long-term goal. It is up to the person in desiring oneself to do it.

On Life

He advised people to be cheerful in life and keep smiling and not to take life very seriously. This, he believes, is one way to relax the body and is good for running. The suggestion he gave to people was to keep smiling all the time.

Wilson Kipketer - The Man Who Still Holds The 800M World Record

A Summary

Before I took up marathon as a passion, I was actually obsessed with the middle distance events. I used to see how Sebastion Coe, the person who heads the London Olympics 2012, winning and competing with Steve Ovett and Steve Cram. All of these runners were from England. Sebastion Coe was able to break the 800m, 1000m, 1500m and 1mile World Records within 41 days. All I know was that, during the period, the father by the name of Peter Coe was training Seb Coe to break the record to 1min 41.73sec. Seb Coe was also doing the Strength training program by Sir George Gandy during the period. Sir George Gandy was training middle and long-distance runners in Loughborough University then.

Most of the world records of the middle and long-distance events kept falling except for Seb Coe's 800m World Record. It was known as the untouchable record for nearly sixteen years. Ultimately, Wilson Kipketer broke the 800m World Record to 1min 41.11sec.

Wilson Kosgei Kipketer

It is known as Wilson Kosgei Kipketer (born 12 December 1972) was born in Kenya. Later on, he became a Danish citizen and kept running as a middle-distance runner. He holds the current world records at both indoor and outdoor 800 and the indoor 1000 metre distances. He kept dominating the 800m race for nearly 10 years, remaining undefeated for a three-year period. Although he was not able to win an Olympic gold medal, he was, however, able to win gold medals in three successive editions of the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, in Gothenburg (1995), Athens (1997) and Seville (1999).

Who is Wilson Kipketer?

Kipketer was born in Kapchemoiywo, Kenya. His tribe was called the Kalenjin tribe. Over time, when Wilson Kipketer was in his teens, he was first observed and noticed by 1968 and 1972 Olympic champion Kip Keino. Keino suggested Kipketer attend the Catholic St. Patrick's High School in Iten that was famous for bringing up young runners.

However, in 1990, when Kipketer travelled to Denmark as a foreign exchange student, studying electronic engineering at the Copenhagen University, he was fascinated by Denmark so much so that he applied for Danish citizenship. Kipketer competed for Denmark in the 1995 World Championships. It was there that he claimed his first World Championship title in the 800 metres.

In 1997, Kipketer was at his best. In March, in the Indoor World Championships in Paris, France, he broke the indoor world record time in the heats by nearly a second, breaking Paul Ereng's World Record of 1:44.84 by improving the time to 1:43.96. Later on, he took a second off the world record with an unbelievable 1:42.67 in the finals of the 800m race. On 7 July, he equalled Sebastian Coe's world record of 1:41.73 for the 800 metres at a meeting in Stockholm, Sweden. Coe's record had stood for sixteen years. He went on to break the record twice in the same year, the first time being in Zurich, Switzerland at the Weltklasse GP on 13 August when he ran 1:41.24. On 24 August, eleven days later, he improved the world record to 1:41.11 at the Grand Prix meet in Cologne, Germany. He was voted Track and Field Athlete of the Year by Track and Field News Magazine.

Marissa Sng Rui He - A Story on Resilience

In the recent Inter-Constituency 4.3km Road Run, held on 31st July 2010, Taman Jurong Constituency won the championship by obtaining 55 points. The first runners-up for the team event was procured by Potong Pasir Constituency, which had a total point of 94. With 108 points, Yio Chu Kang Constituency came in third.

In the Inter-Constituency Road Run, what was very striking was, Marissa, from Bendemeer Secondary School, did her school and her constituency proud by coming in overall 7th in the Women's Open individual section with a time of 20min 06.72sec. Pauline Elizabeth Mulroy came in first with a time of 18min 14.09sec. Second position and third position was Phua Hua Qin and Winona Howe, with a time of 18min 47.23sec and 18min 54.27sec, respectively. In the Men Open section, Giriber Swaminathan came in first with a time of 14min 14.97sec.

In the National Schools' Cross-Country Championships 2010, Marissa shares her bad memories of how she was disadvantaged and in this Inter-Constituency Road Run, she proved to everyone that she is a force to be reckoned with, from her recent successful performance.

Picture 1 - Marissa Sng, beaming with a smile with her recent performance (7 pos) by being the youngest to come in top 10 in the Women Open individual section.

I interviewed her mother first before interviewing Marissa.

An Interview with Jenny Sng, the mother of Marissa.

How did your daughter fair in this competition?
I am happy with her progress so far. It is a breakthrough for greater achievements to come. I think she is right on track in her training programme and I am glad she is gaining ground for all her hard work.

What are your feelings about this competition?
During her last National School Inter-school Cross Country 2010, she was blocked by a competitor from one of the top cross-country school, from start till nearly the end of the competition. The officials were thinly spread throughout the route and were not able to witness this. It is sad, that the girl could get away with cheating. Marissa could have done well if these sort of unsporting actions were not present. Marissa told me that she has seen this girl running near Alexandra Road.

In the u14 boys' race, it was also surprising to find that another boy from her school also encountered elbowing at the 3km mark by another top school, wearing brown kind of singlet. I think for the good of Singapore athletics, teachers and coaches should guide and emphasize the core values of sports namely sportsmanship, excellence and friendship in their athletes.

I am satisfied and happy with the way the competition was conducted. As a parent, I feel that the Inter-Constituency competition was run/conducted in a fair manner. My daughter enjoyed the race a lot.

An Interview With Marissa Sng Rui He
What was your position for the race?
My position for the race was 7th.

What was your timing for this race?
My timing was 20min 06sec.

Which category did you take part in?
I took part in the Women's Open category.

How was the weather like during the race?
It was really hot!

What is your age now?
I'm 15 years old now.

Did you enjoy the race?
Yup, I enjoyed it (:

What position did your team get?
1st runner up

Are you happy with your result?
I'm very happy (:

How did your family felt about your result?
They were very proud of me. They congratulated me on my achievement.

Do you have anything to say about today's race?
In April, in the National Schools' Cross-Country Championships 2010, I was actually blocked by a girl, from the start of the race to nearly the end. In fact, I know the girl and the school the girl is from. In the past, I was really sad for not doing well as the girl did not make me run fairly. I trained so hard and this was what happened to me. With the Inter-Constituency Road Run 2010, I am erasing all my bad memories of the past. I am really delighted to know that I am the youngest in the Women's Open section by getting the seventh position, in the top ten category. My team was proud of me as they took my timing and we won 1st runner up for the team category. My team is Potong Pasir Constituency.
