The Great Haile's U-turn From Talk On Retirement

If you ask me, it is only when a person reaches 40, for the inactive, and 45 for active to start going through the process of degeneration of the body due to ageing. My belief is, before a person reaches between 40 and 45, he or she should get his or her lifetime personal best before the ageing process takes place, even though ageing is slower for those who are active. I feel that youthful days are the best to achieve one's best and not during old, which is harder.

Even for myself, at the age of 43, I was able to come in first local for men open section in the 2008 Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon. This is because of my intensive running years from 22 years of age to 29 years of age that I benefited from. From age 29 to 39, I was still competing but not as intensive as those in the past. I started to do intensive running again at 40 plus as it was a plan I had to see whether I could come in top after 40. I succeeded in this and it would not have been achieved without the grace of God.

As for Haile Gebrselassie, I feel that until 40, he is still strong enough to compete. He is one of those who have broken numerous difficult record, doing the impossible. Hence, it is a good sign that Haile has made the right decision of not retiring. Moreover, he stated that he will continue to run at the top level for the next two to three years, his manager and agent said on Monday. Many will be finding it exciting to see our world record holder running in the London Olympic 2012.

Gebre Gebremariam, the winner of 2010 New York City Marathon recently told that Haile, two-time 10,000 metres Olympic gold medallist made the decision to retire after limping out of his first New York marathon with a knee injury last week was all out of a spur of the moment. It was believed to have come from frustration that he had from the race rather than his rational mind. He also did not consult his long time manager before jumping to a conclusion.

Dutch manager Jos Hermens said that 37-year-old athlete Haile will still run for the time being. His manager said, "Gebrselassie likes to run and running is his life. He has changed his mind." "You cannot just stop because you lost a race. After New York, Gebrselassie took the week to make up his mind and it is his will to continue running," said Jos Hermens, his manager for 20 years. "He is still in good shape and can still compete at the highest level for the next two to three years," he added.

Judging from Haile's 59min 33sec for BUPA Great North Run (Half-marathon), the world feels that Haile has the gear to even possibly come in top in the London Olympics Marathon 2012. The world is awaiting to see this.
