Fat loss - Using my own experience

Picture 1 - It is important to know the truth by finding it out by yourself

Resistance training is not a good way to reduce fat. I gained this knowledge through experience when I was 73 kg in the year 2005. I found that by doing 600 sit-ups and strength training, my fat level did not go down, until I started doing more aerobic running, walking and other training in the gym like the treadmill, cycling and elliptical machines. Simply, by doing this activity, I made one guy come in third in a marathon in the year 2005 and I was 6th for that year before I came in first in the year 2008, at the age of 43.  With this training, I reduced my weight to 66 kg in 6 months. I did a 10km race in the year 2005 in 55min and it was not good for all the efforts that I was putting in to lose weight. The next couple of months, I lost a total of 6 kg in 6 months, I was able to go to 60kg with aerobic training alone. I told myself to continue with the aerobic training and I finally brought my weight down to 55kg, in year 2006. I followed a very structured way of training to reduce my weight using my own experience as a coach and an athlete as well as using Sports Science and use a step by step approach to weight loss.

My conclusion was that nothing can beat aerobic training for weight loss. It is a sad mistake that one wants to bring in resistance training to lose weight where a person's weight usually goes upwards and not downwards. I knew that it will be a waste of time doing resistance training if the purpose is to lose weight.

It was only when I brought my weight down to 55kg that I started to do resistance training so that I could run much faster. The keyword for people, who are overweight, who want to run a marathon or any distance race, which ranges between 1.5km to the ultramarathon is to bring the weight down first and then focus on fitness next. By bringing the weight down in fact one's fitness scores actually go up instead of going down. However, I have met many impatient people who want to do resistance training at all cost. I believe that they do it for two main reasons. One of the reasons cited frequently by some people is that they find that many people are doing this. Hence, they feel secure that they are doing the right things by following the norms, and they feel that following the norm is the best. This is like blind leading the blind, to my observation. One will not go far because of this action. The next reason cited by them is to get the 6 packs at the abdominal area and to get muscular etc. As Wilson Kipketer, former World Record Holder for 800m had mentioned last year to middle distance athletes of Singapore that one may indulge in weights training and may get lost to a point that they have in fact, without their own knowledge, actually have chosen another sport, like weight lifting, throwing events, instead of running. He asked us to be careful with resistance training. Knowledge of Sports Science is important if one wants to succeed.

In the past, as I can remember vividly, I have trained some people to reduce weight through an aerobic activity and felt, using my experience, that it will be a good idea to tell people to focus on cutting down on weight as a person gets fitter, in fact by doing this action. Many as I had known did not believe in this and I found that I was not in a position to help them to lose weight. I was in fact firm in my believe not to waste time in resistance training as no significant results will accrue.

In 2005, only when I saw my weight not going down significantly by resistance training that I mustered all my energies and efforts to predominantly aerobic training, armed with the knowledge of Sports Science and intuition. After reading this article below, I am now convinced that what I did for my runners were all right. Hence, it is good for people to read an article and know that it is important to reduce one's weight first through aerobic training. I hope you have a good read.

Remember, only when you have reduced weight to ideal weight that one can focus on resistance training once a week, in order to get fitter. This is, I feel strongly, that forms the key to improve fitness, which forms as the next target on one's journey to health.

Quality time on the treadmill may be a better way to fight the flab compared to weight training or a combination of the two, a new study finds.
The study comes from Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, and was published last week in the Journal of Applied Physiology.

"Given that approximately two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight due to excess body fat, we want to offer clear, evidence-based exercise recommendations that will truly help people lose weight and body fat," says Leslie H. Willis, MS, an exercise physiologist at Duke Medicine and the study's lead author.

Researchers enlisted 234 overweight or obese adults in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: resistance training three days per week (three sets per day, eight to 12 repetitions per set); aerobic training (walking/jogging 19 kilometres per week); or aerobic plus resistance training (three days a week, three sets per day, 8-12 repetitions per set for resistance training, plus 19 kilometres per week of walking/jogging).

The groups assigned to aerobic training and aerobic plus resistance training lost more weight than those who did just resistance training. The resistance training group actually gained weight due to an increase in lean body mass, the researchers noted.

Interesting, while the combination exercise group worked out longer than the other groups, their results were mixed. Participants did lose weight and fat mass, but the loss wasn't as significant as those who just trained aerobically.

"Balancing time commitments against health benefits, our study suggests that aerobic exercise is the best option for reducing fat mass and body mass," says Cris A. Slentz, PhD, a Duke exercise physiologist and study co-author. "It's not that resistance training isn't good for you; it's just not very good at burning fat."

The Duke team published a second study last year in the American Journal of Physiology, Endocrinology and Metabolism that found that vigorous aerobic activity trumps lifting weights when it comes to trimming belly fat.

Injury - Not an option for those who want to elite runners

Picture 1 - Born in December

I met Dr Kelvin Ng and Ashley Liew at Gokul Vegetarian restaurant at Upper Dickson Road to celebrate Ashley's victory in the Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon 2012 as a local champion after 3 years attempt. We felt, " Well, it is about time we celebrate. Ashley may have done 2hr 35min 40sec in Gold Coast marathon July 2012 but still, he had to prove himself by winning at least in the home ground." It was another challenge altogether, totally. We did not want time the year to go just like that by not celebrating.

The good thing is that, this year, Ashley Liew has made a number of impact in triathlon races, Texas Ironman race and the Stanchart marathon 2012. A lot of good news came this year. Within 4 years,  Ashley, from 39min plus in 10km, brought the timing down to sub - 35min, three times. In POSB race, he emerged as a champion, defending his title for the race which he won last year as well.

Picture 2 - Not just coaching alone, but you need to improve your gait and running mechanics through proper alignment of the body.

As for the Ironman race, he was the second-fastest in the Singapore History by a local with a time of 10hr 03min for the race.

Ashley told me that the Ironman may be the last that he is going to attempt. I was glad that he did well.

Yesterday, Dr Kelvin told me that he would like to celebrate Ashley's belated birthday with mine, which falls on a later date of Dec.

During the dinner, I was talking to Dr Kelvin that in the past Ashley used to get himself injured many times. I told him that for this year he was in no way injured. I felt that many people out there are training with their feet and legs not conditioned or aligned to run properly. The runners' running technique is affected by lifestyle and I feel strongly, from my heart, that going to a chiropractor would be a good choice to expedite one's improvement in running before in fact coaching takes place.

I felt that to improve in running and to find a coach next, one should first correct the body posture and make amends for bodily posture. Alignment is important. Yoga also aligns a person. However, a faster way is to see a chiropractor and to do a quick fix and to sit, walk or run in a correct way.

After our treat from Dr Kelvin, Ashley and I cut the cake together and made our wishes. We finally took some pictures before deciding to go home after a fruitful meeting. I told Dr Kelvin to write in my blog his articles and he gladly consented to do this.

Waiting - For elite athletes, waiting is a waste of time.

To manifest a good time for running, it is very important not to waste time. This was told by Mr Lim Jit Imm, former Singapore Athletics Association Vice President, while I was on my way to take part in a 10km race for the Asian Track and Field Championships in Kuala Lumpur, somewhere in the early 1990s, Mr Lim told me that he does not believe in trial and error method.

He wanted the athletes to quickly evolve in running and run faster and get a much faster time. He also wanted good coaching.

Anyway, his dreams were dashed when he finally wanted to step down as a Vice President of the then Singapore Amateur Athletics Assn. He wanted me to name him some potential people who can be good coaches and help them to come into the sport and he left the sport.

Right now, I realise the importance of what he meant.

Why having a coach is important?
This is an important question. In my life, I was also going through a trial and error method in running training and I was actually wasting my time in running, finding things from the book, although it was benefiting somehow. I was able to do a sub 33min 4 times in Singapore. However, it was only when I got to know Sir George Gandy, our Loughborough University coach in the past and my personal coach. Alan Guilder, that I got to know exactly how to train. In a very short time, I did the 10km in a time of 31min 46sec.

Before doing the 2hr 24min 22sec in Chiengmai SEA Games marathon 1995, I was able to do a 7min 02sec for 2.4km and do 32min 22sec in the 10km race held in Singapore that year. I also learnt the art of not to race too much. I also know that there is a formula to run faster with least effort. Just by training hard, it also did not mean to me that I am going to run faster. In the past, I used to work very hard to improve from 32min 52sec to 32min 42sec for 10km, which took me three years to attain. When the right methods were used, I was able to attain 31min 46sec in a span of 7 months, which made me qualify for the inter - University Track and Field Games in England. Although I met the qualifying mark for the 10km race, I had to reject the entry to the race as it was during my exam time. I also had to reject running in the 1993 SEA Games at that time due to exams. Both races were clashing with my exams.

Having said that, my observation is that we should realise that there is a formula for doing well in running and top runners use it and do well in running. They can materialise their hopes and dream at a much faster rate because of this. Many people can take advantage of this formula and benefit most in their progress in running. As a coach having the knowledge of Sports Science to better understand the working of a structured training programme is also an added advantage for the coach.

For me, the blessing in life came when coaches like George Gandy and Alan Guilder came to improve me in running. The added blessing came when I did sports science research on 1500m and Heart Rate response which made me understand running better. I was able to win 12 titles in National Inter-Schools' Cross- Country Championships in my life. Thanks to George Gandy and Alan Guilder. Thanks should also go to the lecturers who taught the knowledge of Sports Science.

An Interview With Coach Rameshon - Story of Teamwork

Many have read of Ashley Liew. You may have seen him running in the Standard Chartered Marathon itself. As we have already read my interview with Ashley, I was thinking that it would be a good idea to have an interview with his coach as well.

He is none other than Murugiah Rameshon, whose Marathon record set 17 years ago, 13 December 1995 at the Chiang Mai SEA games still stands to this day.

This article will be about how Ashley Liew and Coach Rameshon on how the worked together up till the Standard Chartered Marathon 2012.

An Interview with Coach Rameshon

How did you first start training Ashley?

I first met him when I started training the Singapore Management University(SMU) team back in  Dec '08. SMU wanted me to bring the team from 7-8 position to Top 4 for the Intervarsity Track and Field Championships. While bringing the team to the top 4, I was focused on individual events as well.

At that time, Ashley was doing somewhere around, as I can remember, 39minute plus for 10k in the Inter-varsity track and field race, and he was also doing triathlon and ironman as well. I realised that this guy was a multi-talented personality. Above all, he showed great respect  during all training sessions which made me to treasure him more. I realised that he will do wonders in the long run. A raw diamond, indeed!

When I was training Singapore Management University, I felt that he had a good running style, fluid, but I saw the room for improvement. I knew then that It would take at least 3 years to improve his running style. In the long run, he was proving himself to be a force to be reckon with. I was excited about this challenge to bring the best in him. With the type of champion values that he had, most importantly, humility, I felt that to be a champion is somewhere in the near future.

Recently, it has been found that in most races, especially, the 10km runs, he ran and finished with a good running style.

I feel that he has this running style and running technique has got something to do with his early youth involvement in sports which has given good coordination. Previously he did - canoeing, tennis, cycling and swimming.

How did you turn Ashley's 2011 SCMS's defeat to victory this year?

We were flexible in our strategy. Ashley wanted to go for a 2hr.34min, which I had set. However, this time around we decided that it would be a good thing to hold back from the start. (From his 8km new personal best time of 26min 34sec, from his past personal best time of 26min 57sec, I felt that his chance of winning is 95% and I was confident in saying this. There were other indicators to show that he has a great chance of winning. I assured him a day before that he is in top form for the race) We finally decided to go for a win rather than doing a very good time. We actually came up with that strategy, in fact, a day before the race. Hence, I realised that the strategy I have discussed with him for nearly all the races are very different from this year's strategy.

What happened during the race?

The first part was to take it easy. Then, later on, at the 9km mark, I saw Ashley deciding to stay with the Elite women, which I felt that he was making a fast break at that point, which was, in fact, the best strategy to break away from all local competitors. Even I would have done that in that situation. The good news was that the group he was running in a group of more than 20 runners in it. Some male runners plus many top female runners were in it. I saw Mok Ying Ren, 3 times winner of Stanchart Marathon for 2009, 2010 and 2011, about 3 min to 4min away from Ashley at that point.

When I saw that situation, somehow I felt that Ashley had won the race there itself. This came to my mind at that time, and I did not know why it came. Maybe the strategy that he did was a very convincing one, making me think that the race was Ashley's as he had grasped the opportunity at the right time.

The group that Ashley followed had many quality elite female world top marathon runners in it. Even if this group of 20 people break up, I realised that he will still have some runners in front to pursue, unlike what was going on with other local top runners. They had one or two people to run with. Although it was advantageous for our local competitors and Ashley, it seemed more advantageous for Ashley.

At the 29km mark, Ashley's gap away from Mok was huge but as I coach, I felt like sending a telepathic message to Ashley to tell him that the most important part of the race was the last 10km. My heart was for Ashley to win because of his effort during training. He looked stronger at the 29km mark when he passed me.

Over time, the time came when Ashley was finally coming to the last 80metres of the race, and he did 2hr 45min for the marathon race. I knew that Ashley was going to be finally a champion for the race. Ashley did 2hr 45min 08sec. I was glad for Ashley as I felt that all the faith, hard work and teamwork had paid off, eventually.

Picture 2 (left to right) Ashley Liew and Coach Rameshon

What are your future plans for Ashley?

For the near term, we are sure of taking part in the Gold Coast Marathon 2013 somewhere in July. Gold Coast Marathon 2013 is at the top of our agenda and we are going to keep working as a team. We will be going together to the Gold Coast. I am hoping that he will be able to do a sub- 2hr 30min and one day do a sub- 2hr 20min.
After that, the next goal for Ashley is to go to the Olympics. My firm belief is that Ashley WILL go to the Olympics if he continues to train and have consistency. Now, why I say this. If I can qualify for the Olympics with my SEA Games 2hr 24min 22sec performance, I believe that Ashley can too. I have unshakeable believe that he can do it.

Any advice for aspiring sportsmen?

Young people should start to play sports when they are young, for example, as low as 6 to perfect skills needed to excel in sports like coordination, quickness and agility

If people want to wait for someone to help and wait, I believe that what can be achieved in 20-20 years can be achieved in 1 to 3 years time, if they are given the proper guidance. Ashley improvements are given below.

2010 - 2hr 52min Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon
2011 - 2hr 45min Hong Kong Marathon 2011 (Feb)
2011 - 2hr 41min Gold Coast Marathon 2011 (July)
2012 - 2hr 38min Hong Kong Marathon 2012 (Feb)
2012 - 2hr 35min Gold Coast Marathon 2012 (July)

2012 Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon  - 2hr 45min 08sec (Champion)
If anybody needs any help, you can call me, my number is 91004369. Call me when you are ready for the marathon challenge

In closing, I would like to thank the Singapore Sports Council and the Singapore Athletics Association for their valued support in providing Ashley Liew elite status for the Stanchart 2012 as a carded athlete.
