Flexifitness Athletes achieve commendable results in Walking Competition

Picture 1 -  A joyful day out with Family of Flexiftiness, competitors and supporters

The day started with rain at about 7 45am on 5th July 2015, Sunday. We were waiting for the rain to stop, and at about 7 45am, the race started. The race is supposed to start at 7am. There was a delay in the race and some athletes were waiting for instructions. We were wondering whether to stretch or not. We did not want to stretch too early. Finally, we were only given 10min only to start off the race, as the rain was, from heavy, was starting to drizzle. The weather was a bit unpredictable.

I was surprised to see a crowd in this race, as the race walk was never taken that seriously in Singapore. I have put down the results of Flexifitness athletes.

The first race that started off was the 2km boys/girls for junior. After some time the 4km for Men/Women open and veteran started. Overall, we were happy with the result.

Summary of our results:
In Singapore Athletics 2k/4km Walk Series Competition, in the under 15 boys Wei Shen came in 3rd and Jia Wei came in 4th position. They did the 2km race.

As for the 4km competition, Divya and Tan Anja came in 3rd and 4th, respectively, in the Women Open Category (above 15 and under 50 years old). Sumathy came in 6th position in the same category as well. She would have been top 3 if it was 40 years and above. Coach Tan came in 2nd overall in the Men Veteran,  for under 50 years old. Suh Hyeong our female walker, walked and came in 4th in the under 15-year-old race.

Helen Gilby and Alan Guilder (Coach)

I dedicate this topic to my former lecturer of the then College of Physical Education, Helen Gilby, who showed me the truth about drugs. She and my coach, later on, by the name of Alan Guilder were instrumental in enabling me to do well in the marathon (Singapore Standard Chartered Marathon 1994, 2hr 34min 02sec, and in Chiengmai SEA Games marathon 2hr 24min 22sec, 1995)

What you need to know about drugs to improve sports performance.

An Introduction - Simple writing as opposed to scientific writing.
I will not write this scientifically as it will be difficult for a layman to understand the effects of drugs like anabolic steroids etc. For a detailed knowledge and understanding, I am hoping to write more scientifically so that people are well informed, as they may want to know more.

Effects of drugs - Long term negative health effects and Cheating
When somebody says, "Good job on your performance", and if you have taken drugs to improve, it simply means, "Good job on your cheating". One should be ashamed of oneself rather than being happy about it.

If one says, "The other runner cheated, so I cheated." This calls for the authorities to make the race as fair as possible by doing random testing, on any athlete when they want to test for drugs. If you are innocent, there is nothing to worry at all. When you are innocent, you can sleep peacefully and smile throughout your life. When you are guilty, your own conscience will prick you. This is my belief.

Usually, people, in the pursuit of excellence, especially when they are young, are very interested to improve on one's sports performance. They overlook the fact of the effects of what the drug can do in the long term, as in the short term they are usually happy going through a period of success, success and more success.

However, in the mid-term due to the effects of the muscles becoming much stronger, with the tendons and ligaments, not having the corresponding ability to withstand the force of speed generated by the muscular contraction of the runner, especially at the lower limb, one ends up, usually getting a permanent injury.

I have heard of a number of runners who ran fast, in the past, but are no more running now, for performance or even for health currently.  Some I believe that it is due to usual performance injury etc. As for some, one of my friends told me that it could have been due to drugs.

East Germany and drugs

It was in East Germany that anabolic steroid drugs and testosterone were used for performance enhancement by the authorities themselves for enhancing their performance in the 1970s Olympics. The authorities wanted to show that their country was very successful in sports to mask the economic problems that were going on in the country. They had huge success, in the world, with the project, especially in the women competitions. The world was looking towards East Germany for sporting success.

However, earlier on athletes in East Germany were, in the name of health supplements, were given anabolic steroids, instead. As it was a communist country, in the past, the authorities kept the project a well-guarded secret from the athletes themselves. Documents were, however, written when the effects of drugs were found during the drug taking over time, like sickness, allergies and other side-effects of the drugs. Everything was documented so that the scientist was also trying to find the cure for this, while the training was going on smooth.

Parents were not able to see their children, after the talent identification and selection process done by the authorities.

A number of gold medals and world records were broken by the then East Germany. At that time, the authorities ensured that 2 weeks before the major competition, all traces of steroid drug was cleared in the body and the cellular level, so the with the drug testing nothing can be found to label the country a cheat. There was an unfair advantage going on with the usage of drugs. Women became more muscular and stronger.

When East Germany and West Germany merged, with the destroying of the man-made Berlin Wall, the truth that was documented in Leipzig, East Germany, was revealed. That is why, even now, when one comes from East Germany, some people are uncomfortable to take them as coaches, as their training methods have involved the banned substance steroid.

Drugs usage in sports, although has been used in the west also, as in the east, was more prevalent in the Eastern bloc countries of the past.

Effects of Drugs.

From the records of the athletes, negative effects were found in Germany.

Drowning in the pool - In The Then East Germany
As a 16-year-old swimmer was swimming in the pool, after having a lot of improvement in swimming speed the teenager was not able to take the demand of the training that was going on and he just was found dead in the pool. The authorities, just for the sake of continuing the project, did not tell the truth to the public that it was because of the intensive use of the steroid. The central system of the swimmer, involving the heart, was not able to take the punishment of the training.

Hair Growth - Female to Male
Girls were found to have hair grown and the face started to change. A woman literally began to look and behave like a man, having a male voice and features. In an interview, she said that it was very hard for her to go to the supermarket etc as people called her homosexual etc. Because of this the athlete could not mix with society and lived like a recluse. She ultimately married a fellow female athlete in the East Germany team.   The reason for this can be traced to the hormonal imbalance caused by the banned substance anabolic steroid.

Men have the hormone called testosterone which makes a man manly. As for a female, naturally, the hormone called estrogen is produced to make them feminine, by gestures, voice, body shape etc. Due to the imbalance caused by the steroid, men are found to have breast later on, with other female characteristics coming in along the way.  A female starting to look like a male takes place over a long period of time, due to intense taking of drugs.

East German parents who saw their daughters doing well in the sports, after some years, found that their child having a hoarse voice, and was found to have male characteristics like aggressive behaviour bodily hair and so on.

Balding
There are several causes of balding. Some are old age and some are due to genetics and other factors as well. It is however shown by scientific evidence that too much taking of drugs will lead one to balding. This has been documented in several studies.

HDL
High-Density Lipo-protein fats are known to be good fats. It helps in lowering bad fats, called Low-Density Lipoprotein in our body. By doing sports, studies show that HDL fats will increase over time. However, due to drugs intake, one may lower HDL fats in the body due to steroid or banned substance intake. I have heard of people dying from liver dysfunction.

A friend that I met a few years ago told me that he took drugs to improve performance. Now, after hearing from a doctor he has a fatty liver. My friend is all the time worried about what is going to happen next. He told me that he was so foolish to take the drug when he was young. He told me that he was rash to make the decision and he is regretful of his mistake. He is now worried about his loved ones - his son and his wife.

Attitudinal changes
Female who took drugs in the then East Germany saw themselves to have aggressive behaviour in themselves. There were mood swing etc from drug-taking. They also suffered from depression.

Ageing
In the long term, one will age earlier. Hence, that means that the people that ingest the banned substances like drugs etc will be weaker earlier on in life.

The above-mentioned effects are some of the negative results of taking banned substance like anabolic steroid etc. Just for a short period of glory, a young athlete is attracted to improve one's performance to a greater extent. It is in the hope that one knows about the effects of drugs that one thinks about themselves and family and choose the righteous path to do well in sports.

Paula Radcliffe, the world record holder of the marathon, currently, has written in her book that every athlete should go for drug testing, in order to bring fairness and to stop doping practices. I support Paula in this quest as she wants to press on on this believe that athletes should not run with a banned substance, steroid, testosterone etc.

Fall From Grace - Ben Johnson

In the past, my friend told me after the 1988 Seoul Olympic's 100m race that Carl Lewis was a sore loser for coming second to Ben Johnson. Ben Johnson won Carl Lewis. However, after failing the doping test, Ben Johnson was disqualified and he fell from grace. It was a big fall for him. The world will remember this for a long, long time. I think that it was a humiliation to him and the family, as a whole.

It was also not fair to other competitors that he had competed against. A few years back, this thing happened again when Lance Armstrong, a multiple Tour de France winners, who were denying about drug-taking, finally admitted to taking it. Armstrong had a huge gathering of fans globally, and he lost all of them by his foolish act, which he thought will remain hidden.

In Rocky 4 movie, we could see the Russian boxer taking drugs, after training hard, having good nutrition, having sports physiological support etc. The last thing before the boxer fought the match with Rocky Balboa was to get an injection, steroid, for an unfair advantage. This is nothing but a show of no sportsmanship.

Similar kinds of injection needles were found in Alberto Salazar's house. We were his fans, in the past, admiring his running feats, especially in New York City Marathon races. He was floating when he was running and winning the race.

Seventeen accusations from different individuals were reported against Alberto Salazar. The fact is that these are individuals who spoke against were earlier on taking him as a hero.

I believe that if a person who wants to win by using banned substance etc, it is wise that they give up sports, as they may affect their health in the long run and it is not good for them. They are poor role models for our youth to follow. Random testing is important to be given by the authorities so that performance-enhancing drug taking does not become rampant. It brings chaos to society.

Before one take drugs, it is important to think about oneself and the family, especially not to defame the family.

In the past, I know Alberto Salazar as a model runner for many. He won a number of championships in the marathon races. My friend, Ow Kok Meng, used to praise about Salazar's feats and we were inspired when we were young, running for our school Saint Joseph's Institution.

Salazar, a Cuban, to my understanding, has won a number of New York City Marathon races in the early 1980s. Salazar also won the 1982 Boston Marathon race in the Men Open category.

I was appalled to hear that Alberto Salazar, who is currently the head coach of the Nike Oregon Project in Oregon, Portland, has been named for doping allegations, jointly by BB Panorama and ProPublica.

After Lance Armstrong's admission to drug-taking, this may become a serious blow to sports if Alberto Salazar is proven guilty of taking unfair advantage by using doping in sports.

Recently, I have already heard a number of athletes being caught for doping charges, and have been proven guilty of wrongdoing, by taking unfair advantage in sports to win. This is embarrassing in sports. There is a Tamil proverb that does say something about cheats. " A cheat can keep cheating for a number of days, but one day, he/she will surely get caught."

By Marcel Sng

Coach Rameshon - The coach who developed more than 10 athletes to realise the dream of a sub-3hrs in marathon races.

First, let me tell my Story (By Marcel)

The are many reasons for me to post this blog spot. I feel special knowing Coach Rameshon from young. I have seen Coach Rameshon when I was just 15 years of age and was recommended by my sister Marissa Sng. He has trained me individually, from the past. He has enabled me to do a quick 8min 22sec within a span of 3 months. I don't know how I did it but it was an amazing journey of fun and hard work during training.

While I was training with him, my school, Saint Andrews School athletes also took part in National Track and Field Championships. The school allowed me to train specifically with Coach Rameshon after knowing his credentials. While I was conditioning myself in running, Coach Rameshon told me to take up 2000m steeplechase. I was taken aback when I come to know about this and I asked for the reason to do it. He told me that I have a speed that is about 11.5sec for 100m and a jumping ability which was good. I told him that it will be difficult for me to train as after National Cross-Country Championships, as I had only one and a half weeks left to train, on the steeple itself.

Just before that he modified the training for me and I was enjoying every minute of it. Coach told me that I have courage as well as the jumping ability in hurdling a steeple. I told him that I don't think that I can enter the finals of the 2000m race for Under 17 boys. However, after his persuasion, I decided to go for it. The most surprising thing happened was when I found out that none of my school athletes entered finals of the different races that had run in. As there was nothing to lose, as the school did not expect anything from me, I plucked up my courage and went for it.

In the heats, Coach Rameshon gave me a different strategy. I was running slower from the start. Then, I was going at a moderate pace from 2 laps. From the 3rd lap, I was speeding up and ended 6th position towards the finish. I did not know whether I was in the finals but Coach told me that I was in the fastest heats. I was jubilant to know that I was in. The Saint Andrews School athletes were feeling happy for me that I had entered and told me all the best. I consoled them not to feel sad on their being out of the finals.

In the finals of the 2000m, Coach Rameshon told me to take lead earlier on first water jump and than to take it easy at the next stage of the race and allow runners to overtake me. I was going the first three rounds at a moderate pace. I realised that I was actually the last runner of the race at that point. It was really very depressing to see that but I stuck to my coach's advice, word for word. The race was not over. It was at this point that I remember Coach shift to a higher gear after running the 3 1/2 rounds.

At the 3 1/2th laps, I was closing up some runners. It was at the last two laps where I found out that the other runners were tired out. I saw some jumping in the water of the water jump. I was not as tired as them. Easily, I could overtake the runners of the tail end. It was surprising for me to see some good runners being overtaken by me. I was 14th when I had the last lap to go. Gradually, I was moving up in speed and sprinted at the last 300m and overtook another two runners. Eventually, I ended the 12th position. This was something that surprised me in my life and it was an achievement. All those athletes, I thought that cannot be beaten were overtaken by me, especially the independent and autonomous schools, such that I developed self-belief in myself. I thank Coach for this. I believe that I could have come in top 3 if I had come at least a year back.

After that, I studied for my GCE 'O' Levels and did my diploma in Law. Coach Rameshon suggested me to do NCAP Level 1 conducted by Singapore Sports Council. I completed and understood the principles of training better.

As I have spoken about myself. I will now touch on Coach Rameshon's development of runners to do sub-hours in a marathon race. The fact and figures are given below. Recently. Coach Rameshon went personally to the USA to Spartanburg to support Ashley Liew to run in the New Orleans Marathon 2015. That was his third travel to the USA to support Ashley Liew. Ashley surprised everyone by doing a time of 2hr 32min 12sec and also came in second in the New Orleans Marathon 2015. Ashley Liew posted the fastest marathon time for the year 2015. He is now second to Soh Rui Yong for the upcoming SEA Games. Other than that none of the runners are ahead of him.

I asked Coach on Ashley's potential. He told me that Ashley, in the long run, will be able to do a sub-2hr 20min. This is his belief over Ashley!

Just last weekend in Japan, our Flexifitness athletes delivered great results when they ran in Tokyo Marathon 2015 on the 22nd of February. The following athletes did exceptionally well. They are Andreas Wenger (2hr 51min 38sec), Desmond Soh (3hr 36min 30sec), Jennifer Quek (3hr 42min 19sec) and Kenneth Lim (4hr 11min 20sec).

Having said that, I would like to say that there are altogether 11 athletes who have done sub-3hours in a marathon. My only advice to runners is if you are finding to improve your running, a person that I would suggest for one to train under is Coach Rameshon. His training is very structured and the training done is to quickly evolve in running. People have spoken to me that I, in actual fact have a good running style of running. I shall list down the runners who have done sub-3hr for marathon below and am going to come out in parts to write a story on these below-mentioned athletes' achievement. I hope to be one of the sub-3hour runners in a marathon one day.

I shall write the 11 part series finding things on how these below-mentioned athletes achieved their goals in running. I believe that it will inspire one to go for it. You can see that with just 5 months training, as a 3hr 07min runner in a marathon, Andreas Wenger, a Swiss national, living in Singapore, trained with Flexifitness and did 2hr 51min 38sec). All Andreas wanted to do was to do a time of sub-3hour in life. It seems Andreas has the potential to do a sub-2hr 50min in a race soon, according to Coach Rameshon.

Runners Under Coach Rameshon who have done  sub–3hrs
1. 2hr 56min – Dr Ben Tan (3rd in Stanchart Marathon 2008)
2. 2hr 50min – Dr Benny Goh (for a marathon). Sundown Ultramarathon 84km record holder, Dr Benny has 4 sub – 2hr 55min marathon timing from the year 2009.
3. 2hr 46min – N. Ganesan (former national record holder, 14min 57sec for 5000m)
4. 2hrs 37min – Ernest Wong (Hong Kong Marathon, 1998)
5. 2hr 35min – Balasubramaniam (Singapore International Marathon 1991)
6. 2hr 46min – Daniel Ling ( Stanchart champion, 2007)
7. 2hr 39min – Khoo Chin Poo (2003, Vietnam SEA Games)
8. 2hr 44min – Ernest Ng Soo Hong (Gold Coast Marathon, 1995)
9. 2hr 48min 49sec- Lim Thow Wee (Paris Marathon 2014)
10. 2hr 32min 12sec- Ashley Liew (New Orleans Marathon 2015, 25th January)
11. 2hr 51min 38sec - Andreas Wenger (Tokyo Marathon 2015, 22nd February)

Note: If you in search to improve in running as an elite runner, to do a sub-3hrs for men and sub-3hr 30min for women, or to train progressively and do a better marathon time, for example, 6 to 7 hours marathon to a sub-5hr marathon etc. Feel free to contact Coach Rameshon through the contact info given below.

Picture 1 - Introducing Flexifitness Dragon Lady, Jennifer Quek

In the past, 3 months before Berlin Marathon 2013, Jennifer Quek has been improving in her marathon time, with her own training. Over a period of time, she found herself stagnating and not being able to cross the barrier of 4hr 18min and did not know what to do but was facing a series of disappointment. She needed assistance.

It was then that Jennifer Quek was introduced to Coach Rameshon by Dr Benny Goh. Dr Benny Goh suggested to her to try for a more structured training program and recommended FlexiFitness. That's why she gave it a shot. These were the information that we gather from her earlier interview answers given to me by Jennifer. We also call her 'The Dragon Lady' of Flexifitness', due to her fearless way of running. It inspires us to see her run along when we train with her at night.

She started with the group Jun 2013 and ran Berlin Marathon in September, that year itself, and did It was only 3 months of training completed. In last year's Osaka Marathon 2014, Jennifer did a 3hr 45min 47sec for the race. I was really amazed by her mental strength to follow the program in a consistent way. As an aspiring female athlete, I myself admire her courage and tenacity to train hard during our training and follow the program religiously.

With a workload in her workplace, which makes her work until 3am, she still comes for our training consistently and does not allow any form of slackening in attendance.

It would be good to compare her past timing with her present timing. One can see how she has been improving in her run timing -  5km to the marathon.

Coach Rameshon says that it is just a matter of time for her to do the 3hr 30min time. In this Tokyo Marathon, the 3hr 30min target was prevented when Jennifer had a bad fall at the 21km mark. Fortunately, with her resilient way of running, she continued her way to a 3min plus personal best time.

Jennifer Quek - Woman with Iron Determination

Except for Mr Kenneth Lai, who told us that he is recovering from an injury, the rest of our athletes wanted to go and do their personal best time at Tokyo Marathon 2015. Mr Kenneth just wanted to go for an easy run during the marathon  and he also wanted to support his fellow runners.

Picture 2 - Jennifer, overcame her plight of falling down to a personal best time.

The rest of the runners - Andreas Wenger, Jennifer Quek, Mr Desmond Soh and Mr Kenneth Lim - all did personal best times there. Jennifer informed Coach Rameshon that she was aiming for 3hr 30min, but at the halfway mark of the marathon race a tragedy took place where she fell to the floor and was having bruises on both knee area. With iron determination, she did not pull out of the race but continued on and did the best out of the worse situation. She ran with resilience and came with a personal best again.

She did a time of 3hr 42min and 19sec. If she did not fall at the half-marathon mark, she would have done a much faster time, this is my strong feeling. She has sent Coach Rameshon both knees plastered with first-aid and the breakdown timing, and I shall share this all in my next blog post where I will put up her interview answers.

Mr Desmond Soh, a pilot, has communicated with Coach Rameshon on his 3hr 36min new personal best time. After knowing all the timing, we were still wondering about what time did Mr Kenneth Lim do. I was told that he has done an unofficial time of around 4hr 11min 20sec, which is still a personal best time for him. After so long, finally, he has done a personal best time.

The most fortunate news came to us is when Andreas Wenger, a Swiss national who is right now training with us consistently, shared with us on his 2hr 51min 3 9sec new personal best time. Earlier on, all Andreas wanted to do was to do a sub-3hr and it was his dream in life to do it. It is miraculous to see him do in 5-6months of training with us. There was a fear, earlier on, that he may not do it. However, his recent tempo times and race times showed that he was ready to do wonders.

His timing is in the undermentioned link.

Hence, I will like to say, "Well done to all our Flexifitness group of runners!." My suggestion to athletes is to look out for their interview answers that I will be posting it out and I hope that you can read their answers and be motivated in running.
