Meeting with Martin Keino (13min 10sec personal best for 5000m)

Paul Tergat - Pride of Kenya (5 times World Cross-Country Champion)

Martin Keino is the son of Kip Keino. I met Martin in Kenya during my trip there. Kip Keino is the hero of Kenyan long-distance history. When I was there in the year 2001, I met Martin Keino. At that time, the personal best of Martin was 13min 10sec. On some days, at Kip Keino camp, I was asked to join in in some of the training sessions planned by Martin. I gladly joined in even though I was slightly overweight and untrained at that time.

On the first day of the training, I was asked to run about 16km. As I had been coaching in the former The Chinese High School, I have not been running much. I found the 16km quite hard to run because of not training much. Martin arranged the session for me.

During my stay in Kenya for about 10 days, I realised that the terrain was all made of earth. Most of the Kenyans mode of transport was walking and cycling. The dirt path created for humans were not cleared of traffic. During my few days there,  I went for a 20km in the dirt path route in the cool morning hours. I found that there was no sign of fatigue because of the low humidity and cooling weather. In actual fact, I wanted to run further but there was not much time for me to run. Hence, on that day, I had to come back.

There was another day where Martin gave me a hill workout of 12 x 200m. The training was very tough because Martin chose a steep hill to do that form of training. I joined the training and was able to do about 10 reps of the hill. The rest of the triathletes who joined us gave up the workout after some reps. The Kenyans top athletes were too fast for them.

During my stay there, I also met the former World Record holder for Junior 5km Ismail Kirui, who was the one to inspire me to do a 2hr 29min for the London Marathon. I used to watch Ismail run in the video every day during my two-month self-paid training stint in England with my coach Alan Guilder. Ismail was able to fend off Haile Gebresilassie in the race and obtain for Kenya a gold medal in the World Championships 1993. The run that Ismail ran was phenomenal. He was able to lead the Men Open 5000m World Championships from the start till the end. The first lap that he did was around 1min 00sec. He was also able to maintain the pace by doing 1min 02sec most of the way. What impressed me most was the last round kick where he showed himself to be still strong even at the end. After the finish of the race, straightaway, he was carrying the Kenyan flag to show his patriotism. What a man?

While talking to Ismail, I realised that he was having achilles tendon injury, which made him give up competitive running once and for all. His injury is similar to Liu Xiang's injury. It was a serious injury. He also became slightly overweight because of this. However, his remarkable run and the indelible imprint that he has created in my mind will always be in my mind. Whenever, I think of Ismail, only courage comes to me.

Incredible Feat By Ismail Kirui - Fending off Haile (Etiopia) for the 5000m World Championships 1993, thereby breaking the World Championships Record and World Junior Record to 13min 02sec.

I also met Billy Konchellah the two time World Championships gold medalist for 800m. He told me the essence of running and coaching. He was also a patient person who elaborated the coaching science of running to me. I was very impressed with this person. He was coaching the male and female athletes of Kenya. I also saw some runners from Botswana and western group joining the Kenyan running team. They were all welcomed to learn from the Kenyans. Billy was willing to teach me without any reservation. I had a great experience learning from him on conditioning during the off-season.

After meeting the great athletes of Kenya, later on, I interviewed Martin Keino, who gave me some tips on how the youngsters and Kenyan top athletes train in Kenya.

The Great Haile of Ethiopia with a Kenyan Elite Athlete

Interview With Martin Keino

How many camps are there in Kenya?
There is Kip Keino camp, Daniel Komen (former world record holder) and other camps in Kenya. All the camps are found in Eldoret. (Eldoret, in Kenya, has produced 95% of Olympic gold medals of the total medals won by Kenyans).

Empowerment of the Professional Runners - Both Kenyan and Foreign Athletes

Tell me more about the full-time runners in Kenya?
They are paid about $100 per month to train in this camp. Food and accommodation are fully provided to those who are talented and are interested to do well in running. They are to look after themselves when it comes to washing shoes, clothes, etc. Some of the potential runners are sponsored by the camp to go for overseas races. Upon the athletes' success, they are to pay back to the camp the money loan out upon their return overseas. We have great success in doing this. Overall these athletes are well taken care of.

Dirt Ground - Abundant Dirt Ground Can Go As Far As 30km

How do you train the children and youth?
We introduce the element of fun to them. We do not want the youngsters to burnout early and give up running. In the past, this happened many times and we have lost many athletes. For the youth, we have a different camp, a special one. In the camp, we allow them to do workouts but the coaches will only give them quality feedback and not quantity feedback. Sometimes we may not give any feedback in order to hold back the athlete from pushing too hard when they are young. We strongly believe that the youth should not be very competitive. They should enjoy training and not bother about their timing.

In Kenya - Children Are Not Miniature Adults, They Are Taught Not To Be Competitive At An Early Age.

Have you encountered athletes who only believe in workouts and not mileage training?
These athletes will train and come up very fast. They will start beating a lot of people. About two years later these type of youth vanishes because of burnout. Here, the coach will scold the youth not to be competitive at an early age. However, kids are kids, they want to challenge and get themselves burnout. They always want to win and push too hard. I think a workout of once per week or two is enough to do well in long distance training.

How about the element of hill workout?
We do alot of these type of training during off season. When we go to track season, we drop off hills. However, sometimes, we may continue even during the competitive season at least once a week hill workout.

Why did you bring us to a place an hour away from Kip Keino Training Camp to do the hill workout?
We are staying at a level which is 5000ft above sea level at the Kip Keino Training Camp. This camp is good for us to stay. We do run much. If we do, we just go for a long run and not for a workout. However, in order to do a workout, we find that a height which is 3000ft, which is good for doing workouts. So, that was why I brought you and the rest to this place. At 3000ft above sea level, an athlete is still at altitude but at this altitude one can run faster than at 5000ft above sea level. One will be able to concentrate on speed. One will feel like having nausea when doing a workout at 5000ft. The air is less dense and it affects breathing to a certain extent. For good training, we stay at 5000ft in order to increase 2,3 dpg in our blood. This will increase our blood. However, for training purpose, we go down to 3000ft to train.

A One to One Interview With Karthik Jayaraman
M. Ramachandran With His Proteges- Left Naren, M. Rama (in cap), runner Li Ting (women runner) and Karthik on the extreme right.

Who is your coach?
My coach is Malaysia's former national athlete, 4 times SEA Games double gold medalist in 5000m and 10000m. In the SEA Games, he is still the current record holder for 5000m. He is also the National record holder in 5000m and 10000m. He is none other than the great Mr.Ramachandran Murusamy.

What were the events that you took part in this Malaysian Games, Athletics?
I took part in the 5000m, 10000m and 3000m steeplechase race in this year's Malaysian Games.

Karthik - In Action Running His Favourite Event 3000m Steeplechase.

How many golds were you aiming for and how many have you achieved?
I was aiming for 3 gold medals and got all three gold medals and done with a personal best timing.

How did your parents feel about this race?
They were so happy. There were no words to explain for them. It was the happiest moments ever for them and me as well.

How did your coach feel about this race?
He was so happy and satisfied with my performance. Most importantly, he was so contented with time I ran because I bettered all his target time.

Can you describe the strategy to run the 5km?
Earlier this season, I was struggling to set a good time in 5000m. My coach told me that he was preparing me for SUKMA. Hence, I peaked during SUKMA and not for local meets. From the start, it was a fast 5000m race which I had to lead all the way. I had a challenge and tough fight coming from Negeri Sembilan's runner by name of Ahmad Luth. I gave my best shot with the remaining 500m to obtain a gold medal. .I got a personal best time of 15.18.38.

Can you describe the strategy to run the 10km?
In the 10000m race, I led all the way just the way I did for the 5000m. I had to put up a fight with Kedah's runner by name of Sivamanogaran. My strategy was to wait for the last km or 2 1/2 laps for the final kick to ensure my gold medal. I won this race with a time of 32.37.13. It was my 2nd personal best time.

What were your previous times for 5km and 10km?
My previous best time for 5000m was 15m 31.00sec. I did it in August 2009. my personal best for the 10000m was 33m 05.78sec. This was done on Feb 2010.

Who is your role model?
My role model is non-other than my precious coach 'the great long-distance king' Mr.M.Ramachandran. He is the best coach ever.

M. Ramachandran - Leading The Pack In The Past

What is your next target for the future?
This coming December, I am aiming for a very important race season.  It is the ASEAN University Games which will be held at Chiang Mai, Thailand. I'm selected to represent Malaysia's Universities for the games. After that, my next target will be 2011 SEA games. This is my long-term target.

We wish Karthik Jayaraman all the best for his endeavours.

Results of the Middle and Long Distance Events (10-19 June 2010)

In the Women Open 800m, K Ganthimanthi improved the Games Record time of 2min 12.89sec, set by Vally a/p Michael (2004), to a time of 2min 09.57sec. (This was run on 15 Jun at a time of 8:25pm). To add another feather to her cap, in the 1500m, K Ganthimanthi broke the Games Record of 4min 45.57sec, set by herself on 2008, by doing 4min 35.91sec. (This was run on 16 Jun at a time of 9:15pm).

In the 3000m steeplechase event, Melinder Kaur's own National Record of 11min 04.14sec, set on Jan 01st August 2009, was broken to 10min 55.31sec. Merlinder Kaur also broke the 5000m record for Women Open by doing 17min 46.01sec.

The 3000m steeplechase Men Open event, finally Karthik Jayaraman got his games record of 9m 20.25sec from 9min 24.06 sec set by Vikkram a/l Sadasivam (2006). This came through the guidance of M. Ramachandran, my former compatriot and the coach of Karthik. With the gold medal from steeplechase, Karthik has a total of 3 gold medals. This feat was done with a span of 5 days.

On the 14/06, he got the first gold in 15min 18sec and on 15/06, he got his gold from 10000m race. With two days rest, on 17/Jun, Karthik ran the race that he had been waiting for, his favourite race, 3000m Steeplechase race. This is a phenomenal feat and very soon Karthik will be preparing for the SEA Games soon in 2011.

M. Ramachandran told me today in his own words," I will prepare him for next year SEA Games". "From now onwards he will only run 3000m SC and 5000m only." These are the words of wisdom from the former Malaysian long-distance runner and the coach of Karthik.

The recent competition shows that Malaysian runners have a lot of potential in getting many SEA Games gold for the next Games. The results look fantastic.

Date: 17/06/2010 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Time of the Race - 9pm Night

Karthik Jayaraman (Malacca) - Wins all three races with 3 personal best timing. Also the feat of breaking the Games Record for his favourite event, the 3000m Steeplechase.

Coach M. Ramachandran's protege Karthik breaks the Games Record with a time of 9min 20.25sec as opposed to 9min 25sec that the coach has targeted. This is a very remarkable performance by Karthik. On 14/06, he had to run the 5000m. Then, the following day, he had to run the 10000m. He ran this race clinching a gold medal. Finally, he ran the race according to his name Karthik Steeplechaser by breaking the Games Record. This also shows great potential in this gentleman as he is able to get the three gold medal within a week. It is really a phenomenal performance to my observation.

Mr Chan Meng Hui - AGE IS NO BARRIER

My Experience With Mr Chan Meng Hui - Appreciation and Gratitude

As I know Mr Chan Meng Hui, he has helped me so much in my running that I can call him as my mentor. He deserves to be called this way because of his selfless services rendered to help me.

In the past, I had to go for some foreign races. Mr Chan was the one who helped me with accommodation and transport. Even to register for the event, he came forward to do it. The best thing about him is that he even paid for everything. For me, I always pay him back even though he does not ask me anything back.

From all the race arrangements I got a very good experience in races, especially in Malaysia. The first race that he helped me ended up in me running against M. Ramachandran in the KL Half- Marathon. I came in 4th with a personal best time of 1hr 14min. A day before that I came in first in the SAA Cross - Country race. I realised that I could have done better for the race if I had not run the cross-country race. That happened about 20 plus years back. Hence, I have great appreciation and gratitude to this kind and noble person who went the extra mile to help me go further in my running performance.

Having said about Mr Chan's selfless service, it would be good to find out more about him in this question and answer session.

Interview Questions Posed to Mr Chan Meng Hui

What is your age now?
80 years old.

When did you start running?
At the age of 55, after retirement. Before that, I was a chain smoker. I was a regular nite club drinker and a bar visitor. I did not engage in many exercises earlier on and I was quite fat with my pot belly out. I was very unfit then, with a height of 1.56m and weight of 65kg.

Why was your reason for taking running as a passion?
Actually, I met some runners who motivated me, especially those from MacRitchie Reservoir, in the past. After meeting them, I took up running as a hobby and over time I was inspired to kick away all bad habits. Thanks to running for giving me the willpower to do this. I also want a new lease of life after my early part of my life. The second part of my life, I wanted my life to be a more meaningful and a healthy one.

Now that you are 80 years old, are you still running?
To date, I am still running. I have done 86 marathons already. The last that I ran was this year, 24th Jan 2010. I ran this in order to remember and celebrate my 80th birthday. The run I did was Khong Kheng (Bangkok) International Marathon. I did the run in a time of 7 hr 19 min.

How is your running routine per week like?
I usually run half an hour to an hour per day. In one week, I am running around 30km per week. I still find this as not enough and am finding ways to increase my mileage. Can you give me the way,.....ha ha ha ...Just joking only.

Do you encounter any injuries at this age of 80?
Fortunately, nothing at all.

What is your fastest marathon time ever?
At the age of 56, I took part in the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon, running a distance of 42.195km in a time of 3 hrs 26 min. This was my best time ever, to date.

How many marathons do you run in the past and now?
In the past, I average my annual marathon runs running 4-5 full marathon per year. However, due to my work commitment, I could only do, currently 2-3 marathon per year, both local and regional marathons.

Is your wife supportive in this?
Ha Ha... When I am busy running, I do not give any kind of problem to my wife. She is happy and contented with my calm behaviour. If I do not run, I give problems to my wife...ha ha ha. Over time, I feel that running does relieve my stress. Hence, I get my wife's full support in this. Thank God for this, to have a wife who is supportive of my passion.

How about your children's support in this?
My sons are very supportive of this. My grandson, about 12 years old, is currently taking up running as a sport. This is good news for me.

What is your goal in life when it comes to running?
My wish is to possibly run at least one hundred marathons. I have 14 marathons left to finish this. Also, I do not foresee any problem in accomplishing this.

What is your short term goal in running?
I have already signed up for this year's Standard Chartered Marathon 2010 (Singapore). I would like to run the race in a reasonable time.

What advice would you give to those who want to take up running?
Running is a very good sport to keep the body and mind sound. The strength I have at present, I feel, comes from running. Mentally, I am still alert, like look at me now, I am talking to you with zest..ha ha ha.

What advice would you give to runners after 40/50/60/70/80?
Age is no barrier. Running will keep you fit. Trust me, fellow men...ha ha ha.

We wish Mr Chan all the best for his upcoming Standard Chartered Marathon (Singapore) 2010. To contact him, e-mail him at  chanmh01@singnet.com.sg

 Karthik Jayaraman from Malacca

Favourite Quotations of  Karthik

NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE
NOTHING without CONFIDENCE
LEARN from MISTAKES
THERE is NO SHORTCUT to SUCCESS
NO Pain NO Gain
THERE is no FAILURE except in no LONGER TRYING

An Interview with Coach Ramachandran's athlete Karthik A/L Jayaraman (from Melaka) coming up soon. Lookup for it.

Next Target - The 3000m Steeplechase Record
After obtaining a gold medal for the 5000m (14/06/10), the following day Karthik won the 10000m gold in a time of 32m 37sec. As he is preparing for the 3rd gold medal for the 3000m steeplechase, Karthik's coach, the legendary M. Ramachandran is aiming for a record. The Games record is 9min 27sec. Coach Ramachandran has targeted Karthik to aim for a 9min 25sec.

We did not want to interview Karthik now as we did hear that he is going to run at night at 9pm, today. It is good that we do not distract him at the moment where he will need immense focus. The mammoth task now is how to get the 3000m record, having run two races on 14 (5000m) and 15 (10000m) June. It is all in a week.

I have given Coach Ramachandran an interview, which will be of much interest to many. After today's race, I will be interviewing Karthik himself of the 3 races he took part in in the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) 2010.
