Bobby Ng - Conditioned to do a sub-5hours in Kaohsiung International Marathon
Mr Bobby, shared with me on why he took up Marathon. He told me that marathon training and racing enables him to relate things well in life. He said marathon itself actually makes us to feel that our own life is a marathon, where we experience a lot of both ups and downs in life. Moreover, marathon training, in fact, makes one to be a more patient person, which allows him to look at things with a bigger perspective, rather than small. Also, it allows one not to be upset if things does not go in the way one wants it to be. On top of that, he mentioned that nothing is impossible if one sets his or her mind in accomplishing something.
After sharing with me, he also had a special mention about Coach Rameshon's professional way of handling coaching and the constant and continued support from Team Flexifitness athletes. He said that without both of these components, it would not be easy to complete the marathon with a respectable time.
We would like to wish him all the best for his upcoming marathon. I believe that one day he will definitely be able to achieve his life time goal of a sub-5hours marathon timing.
Interview with Mr Bobby
What was your target for the race?
Before starting training, I was planning to complete the Stanchart Marathon race as I only have two months to train before I do another marathon in February 2016. However, as the training progressed, I was aiming for a sub 5:30 hour personal best timing, instead. I was ahead of the 5:15 hour pacers before the 8-10km mark until they over took me. I could have done 5:30-5:40 hour timing if not for my stomach upset along the East Coast Park 22-25km mark in which I had to use the washroom twice and the 5:30 hour pacers over took me! Thank god, there was enough toilet paper for me at East Coast Park! I finished the race with a timing of 6:08 hours. I was both delighted and a little disappointed. I was delighted in the sense that I completed the race without any injury and am prepared to conquer Kaohsiung Marathon again in February 2016. I was disappointed as I could have done a better timing if not for the stomach runs!
What was your previous personal best?
I achieved my personal best of 5:30 hour at Kaohsiung Marathon in 2013.
How was the organisation of the race?
There were great improvements in many areas, namely:
1. The additional banana station
2. More liquid and fuel replenishment
3.Adequate medical assistance
4.Especially like the motivational signboards along the route
Room for Improvement:
1. Lack of many cheerleaders along the route compared to many International International marathons races
How was the race route?
It was quite alright but the route between Marina Golf Course and Marina Barrage and the Sheares Bridge was a killer. I wasn't helped by the fact that Singapore runners seriously lacked running etiquette. Starting from the 4km onwards, they were already walking in the middle of the route and blocking the faster runners. They could have walked to the left side of the road. I have wanted to speed up a bit at the East Coast Park and the narrow route along the river bank just next to the Gardens By the Bay, but I could not as i was constantly blocked by the walkers and my running momentum was affected. The organisers could perhaps also think about improving the race route by removing those twist and turns namely:
1. The route just after the Merdeka Bridge where they make us turn into the National Stadium and running onto the short bridge near Tanjong Rhu before turning right into East Coast Park after Dunman High School. They could have followed the old route of making us run along Mountbatten road which was smoother.
2. The race route can be better if we could run straight along East Coast Park Service Road instead of running along the service road before turning into the park and then turning out to Service Road.
3. I don't know how the organisers should plan it but the route after the 30km mark till Marina Barrage was a killer. The hot weather made it worst.
4.Lastly, the organisers should not make the runners run along the super duper narrow pavement opposite the Gardens By the Bay along the river bank. I don't know if the other International Marathons have this kind of routes but I did not expect Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon of this stature to have it as it undermines safety of the runners.
What is your next target?
Kaohsiung International Marathon Feburary 2016 aiming to do a sub 5 hours timing.
